Blizzard's Pardo: No LAN StarCraft II is 'no big deal' |
Ó
Blizzard isn't budging, nor are they worrying over the incessant demand for them to bring back LAN to StarCraft II. Even Executive Vice President of game design Rob Pardo is not at all flustered by the gaining unpopularity of their decision to stick with Battle.net and leave LAN crying out in the corner. For him, it's "no big deal.""Everyone is going to give us flack until it's out," he said. He furthered that:
None of us is going to know how big a deal it is until it's out. We believe that it's really not that big of a deal - that most people are not really going to notice that it's missing. There's a lot of people out there I think that are just afraid that they're suddenly not going to be able to connect to the Internet tonight and they won't be able to play. I actually think that case is extremely rare, and I think we're going to be okay.
But what if it does happen? It's just "rare" -- not entirely impossible.
There's a few legitimate cases that we're going to try and address over time. Location-based tournaments, or let's say I'm in a dorm with a firewall or something like that, hopefully there's a way to determine that and maybe start a peer-to-peer game.
In other words: Unless the apocalypse happens in StarCraft II, you're not getting your LAN. But hey, maybe there is nothing to worry about after all. Won't you give Battle.net a chance?

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I've never played a strategy game online, its always Internet café's or LAN parties, so I guess no starcraft 2 for me.
I'll give the hackers three days before they release a LAN patch....
Blizzard is obviously out to please their investors and not the fans. They know the game is going to sell like mad, so they brush off any complaints basically telling their fans "Stfu, you know you're going to buy it anyway." They couldn't be more wrong in my case. Their stance on the matter is pure arrogance, which is why they're not getting my money.
Thats exactly what is going on here. WoW has made Bizzard into a cash cow. That is the reason why we have to wait so long for games from them. They sit back and rack in the money from past games, and they are sitting on a treasure trove of games to come. So when their cash flow starts to go down, the just relase one of their games (or a "sneak peek of a game to come in 7 years") and fan base goes nuts. How many times did you think, I want to go back and play SC 1 again, after reading about SC2. How many people do you think have lost the disk and went back and bought the battle chest which is still conveniently in stores after all these years. Same with Diablo. to them, SC2's money is already in the pocket. I bet battle.net will have advertising, and that is why they want everyone to use it so much...
What happened to Starcraft, Diablo, Diablo2 and WoW.. Someone will modify already working custom Battle.NET servers to accept SC2.. And then voila! Local battle.net servers all over internet cafes, campuses etc..
