Blizzard surprised about reaction to Diablo III's online requirement

The mega publisher didn't expect the amount of backlash among PC gamers after this week's announcement that Diablo III will require constant internet connection.

diablo-3

"I'm actually kind of surprised in terms of there even being a question in today's age around online play and the requirement around that," said Robert Bridenbecker, Vice President of Online Technologies at Blizzard, in an interview with MTV Multiplayer. "We've been doing online gameplay for 15 years now... and with World of Warcraft and our roots in Battle.net and now with Diablo III, it really is just the nature of how things are going, the nature of the industry. When you look at everything you get by having that persistent connection on the servers, you cannot ignore the power and the draw of that."

While most see the move as Blizzard's way to combat piracy, Bridenbecker dismissed this, saying: "Internally I don't think [DRM] ever actually came up when we talked about how we want connections to operate," he said. "Things that came up were always around the feature-set, the sanctity of the actual game systems like your characters. You're guaranteeing that there are no hacks, no dupes. All of these things were points of discussion, but the whole copy protection, piracy thing, that's not really entering into why we want to do it.”

"I'm a huge purveyor of online sites and from my standpoint, I don't look at DRM solutions and go, 'Wow, those are awesome.' I look at those and say, 'Wow, those kind of suck.' But if there's a compelling reason for you to have that online connectivity that enhances the gameplay, that doesn't suck,” he said. “That's awesome."

Bridenbecker added that solo play is still possible, as they stated previously. "There seem to be folks that believe that because you have to be connected, it's like you're on Facebook or out there with the rest of the world. That's really not the case,” he described. "Yes, you're going to have a connection, yes, your character will be stored on a server, but it doesn't mean you have to socialize with people.”

"It doesn't mean you have to do anything but play the game by yourself. You'll still be able to have a private game,” described Bridenbecker. “You'll still be able to go off and play the game solo and adventure solo. You can opt to bring other people to your world if you want, but that's up to you."

Diablo III is slated to arrive sometime in 2012 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

So I guess people who live in countries where a steady fast internet connection isn't always guaranteed are pretty much screwed then, right Blizzard?
And then you'll be wondering why some people are pirating it -.-

It is not just a steady internet connection on the customers side that is the problem. Anybody else remember when the PS3 had the leap year glitch, and nobody could play any game requiring an online connection for two days. Maybe blizzard will guarantee they will never be the target of a denial of service attack on their servers either. As soon as you introduce unnecessary requirements for just starting a game, there will be more problems pop up than they can foresee.

"Diablo III is slated to arrive sometime in 2012 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC."

Ok...

1. They said they are aiming for a 2011 release on PC still...

2. They are experimenting on console versions, they said if they cant make the genuine Diablo experience work on consoles then they wont release it...

Still not thrilled, I prefer to multitask with my computer. If I'm not playing an online game I,m usually downloading some thing off of the internet. Having to have an active internet connection just to play a game single player I think is stupid. I get the whole security end of it, this is still annoying though.

That's the worst cover up I've ever heard. I understand that games being connected to servers opens up options for ever growing features, but forcing people into "Needing to be online AT ALL TIMES" or else they can't play their game AT ALL is all in the name of fighting piracy - in the wrong way - by punishing those who pay for your product.

Blizzard shouldn't fool themselves. If hackers want free copies of the game, they'll figure out a way to do it - in the end, it's once again the general consumer who is going about things legitly, who get it up the a$s.

As far as I understand this is not so much as to prevent pirating, but as some may know you can make actual money with this game thus they'd want to limit what people might get offline because who is to say someone won't just hack the game and give themselves items offline and then go online and sell them for real money.

A more elegant solution to prevent this sorts of things I guess it would be to give the player the ability to make offline/online only characters, so if someone doesn't have a reliable internet connection they can choose to play offline the whole game as long as that specific character never goes online, and then if they get a better internet connection and want to go online they just have to make a new character.

Anyway I think all this has to do with the fact that there's real money on the line.

Totally agree hush404.

You buy the game, and it requires an online connection... are they going to pay/subsidize you for using your internet connection for that? Nope. Do you have anything of actual value if you are away from internet? Nope. Is this the way any of the others in the series work? Nope.

Sorry, I just don't see the reason why they are "surprised." I know without a doubt that unless it can be severed from online, I won't be playing it... which is sad because I played (and enjoyed the hell out of) pretty much every version of the first two, and a few wannabe clones too.

No you will need to be online to prove you own a legitimate copy of the game. Recently downloaded a ps3 demo to try out one of there single player demos of the offline portion of the game. I was unable to try out the single player demo version with out an active internet connection.

My biggest question is what if their is some problem and my internet is down what do I do then. i can't play diablo 3 but i can play my steam games at least. This seems more like a BS excuse if I've ever heard one. I enjoyed Diablo from a Single Player stand point and got my major enjoyment out of it when I was younger going on Truck trips with my father I would play it for literally hours at a time. There is no on the road with this game They just want me to stay at my home and do what they say. I say this if you don't pull this out and give me the ability to play single player offline then I will not purchase your game and will campaign against until this is resolved.

Bullshit.
This is one of the biggest reasons why people pirate games. If I pirate a hacked version of Diablo III, I won't have to worry about this shit. Pirates never see these DRM schemes. It's sad to know that someone who would have paid for your game pirated it instead because you worked so hard to fight against hackers...

What if you're playing and your internet goes out? What if you're playing and their servers go down? What if they decide to stop paying for their servers?
Fucking retarded.

Well, i guess Starcraft2 is going to be the first and last PC game i'm ever going to buy. Using cracks and hacks are so much simpler, since respectable hackers can produce quality cracks (does seem hard for them any ways since there are so many cracked games).

sure, i guess you could buy the game, and then use the cracks, but since the companies are fucking our asses, i'm choosing to fuck theirs.

It's not that people necessarily want play it offline, but for example Soldiers in combat zones who play games in their down time (because there really isn't anything else) don't have a choice. Neither do people who don't have high-speed internet access. Ironically, only the people who do have that sort of connection could even pirate it anyway.

Many, many people play games offline. How is that hard to understand?
Even if there were only 5 or 6 consumers who had to play offline, it would still be unfair to the consumer.

Actually I stopped playing diablo ii online cause to many poeple would log in just to steal loot and leave for the next server. I found it was to hard to start an online game and get a decent group together to have a good time online. The constant loot stealing going on online ruined the experience for me. I find diablo ii better offline unless I am able to get a lan game up and running with friends.

They done the same with WoW's dialup connectivity(go t rid of it heavily and suggest hispeed), and pretty much getting rid of single-player options... LAN doesn't mean much to those who play online these days... Go out & buy a game console, you still pay for a form of online multiplayers. Companies are moving MORE & MORE to combat the old freebies (LAN, Online play, shares, etc)... They only care HEAVILY about profits than pleasing a gamer.

My pc has been online for over 10 years now, I really don't care if it is required. Obviously you don't even need a fast connection for single player, since it's only your save that is on the servers.

So, what year is it? Early 90's? I could see how the lack of an Internet connection could be an issue.

There are so many ways to connect to the Internet these days, that I really don't think this is the real argument here. Dial up has been around for years, and cheaper than ever. But if you really need portability, I hear you can get the internet on your mobile phone now! No, I don't think most of us are really worried about an internet connection. Piracy seems to be what everyone is worried about. How are we going to hack this game and get it for free? Well, sorry to say, looks like we might actually have break down and pay the devs for their work.

I think it's nice to have my character saved on a remote server, where I can access it from anywhere. It was always a pain when I forgot to back up my data folder from D2, when changing computers. Or I'd have more than one copy, and would have to carefully go through each one to figure out which was the most recent.

I agree, LAN party's were fun, but it's a dying hobby. Get with the times.

# yes seriouslyNickt 2011-08-07 10:18
yeah so in the 90's you couldn't connect to the net everywhere.... well guess what.. it isn't that much better now! yes you can get the net on your phone (at uber slow 3g speed) and have to pay your mobile phone provider an extra £25 a month for the pleasure of using tethering (if your being legal) then of course you risk going over your mobile data allowance and having to pay an extra £5 per mb.... per mb!

this has nothing to do with stopping piracy in the slightest, its another move by the games industry to put everything online and remove any form of single player/local co-op/local multiplayer and its pathetic...

personally i actually hate the whole experience of online play, i would rather that the game world be mine, not other peoples! spore was the only game recently that got it right, take user created content by others and put them in your game but nothing you do to said content affects the other persons game... genius!

Good high speed internet connection can be expensive, me I can only afford the basic barely which is $53 a month for 1 meg downloads and 256k upload. Keep in mind this is a added price tag, so you are no longer buying a game for $60! Now you are purchasing a game that costs $60 + ie. internet $53 a month, just to be able to play the game! If you are not playing the game online regularly ie. 10+ hours that is a expensive price tag for Diablo 3.

Also, you cant roll the cost of the game, and internet connection together. You're already paying for that connection, and you didn't buy for the sole purpose of playing D3. Otherwise you might as well throw in the cost of the computer or console you would use to play it, and perhaps the cost of electricity, the food you'll need to eat, the energy you'll spend going to the store to get it. Looking at it that way, its a wonder how anyone can afford anything.

Actually since it is mandatory to have an active internet connection yes I can. What your going to buy the game and not factor in the extra costs that going a long with being able to play the game. Smart consumers take into account all expenses when making a purchase including all additional costs when making a purchase. As now I have to ask my self how much I really want the game and realistically ask my self how much I think I'm going to play the game, to make the additional expenses that go along with the game purchase worth it?

Ok, so if you don't buy the game, you're going to cancel with your ISP, correct? Because otherwise, according to you, you would be paying half the games cost for no reason.

You can't roll EVERYTHING mandatory to play in. Did you get internet for diablo 3? If yes, then you can count the cost of that in. But if no, you might aswell (As said by MrEjuuice¨) Count in the cost of eating, your computer and electricety aswell.

Donät get me wrong i'm against this too, but Ejuice had a point, and i wanted to lift that.

lol you people act like this has never been done or something. Valve has been doing this for years and they're still on the top of the PC gaming industry. Oh but when Blizzard does it all hell breaks lose? Congradulations ! You can thank the others in the world for that and not blame Blizzard. There is never a sure way to prevent piracy, only attempts to make it more difficult. DRM games have proven in the past to make that difficult. You can't play World of Warcraft offline yet millions of people have no problem with that. And hell you even have to pay a subscription. Oh but does that pay for your internet bill then? Not even close. The people complaining are only coming up with BS excuses that only a few will ever experience. Multitasking? As if an online game has ever taken up a lot of bandwidth while idle. It's your RAM and CPU that you need to worry about. LAN party? Unless your friends lack a computer and internet then I don't see a problem in going online and playing. If it's for hang out time, well I never do hang out time with RPG's. Hang out time for me are FPS'. The Soldier thing, yeah that can be a problem, but I would more so hope you guys would be defending us than playing games. Sure it may be boring, but you wanted to sign up for it. And the internet speed crap? Yeah I was on dial up for 8 years and was still able to play online games like WoW and Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst. I'm sure a simple character sheet is nothing compared to those games. congrats on raging for pointless excuses that are either easily solved or just pointless. If you hate blizzard so much why don't you just say it.
