Blizzard is Really Sorry about Ruining Diablo III

Here’s a funny joke: Blizzard decided to implement a player-driven, real-money auction house into Diablo III, even though no one asked for it. Since real money was at stake, Blizzard had to somehow control items and content to ensure players weren’t duping or hacking. The only way to do this, of course, was to host the items on Blizzard’s own servers, which in turn meant that in order to give Diablo III a real-money auction house, the studio would also have to give the game always-on DRM.

Now, Diablo III’s always-on DRM has hamstrung the game’s performance so badly that the developer is delaying the implementation of the player auction house indefinitely—you know, the very same auction house that was the reason for all this bullshit in the first place. How’s that for a laugh?

Of course, Blizzard feels really bad about the whole thing. Check it out:

Diablo Players:

We'd like to extend a very sincere thank you to everyone who joined the global Diablo III launch celebrations this week, as well as to everyone who was ready to jump into Sanctuary the moment the game went live.

To that end, we'd also like to say that we've been humbled by your enthusiasm -- and we sincerely regret that your crusade to bring down the Lord of Terror was thwarted not by mobs of demons, but by mortal infrastructure. As many of you are aware, technical issues occurring within hours after the game's launch led to players experiencing error messages and difficulty logging in. These issues cropped up again last night for the Americas and Europe servers. Despite very aggressive projections, our preparations for the launch of the game did not go far enough.

We've been monitoring the game 24/7 and have applied several optimizations to help our systems better weather the global rush. As of late last night, specifically 11:50 PM PDT on May 15, all systems have been online and running relatively smoothly. We're continuing to monitor performance globally and will be taking further measures as needed to ensure a positive experience for everyone. This includes some maintenance to implement additional improvements for each region.

In order to make sure everything is continuing to run as it should, we've decided to move out our target launch for the real-money auction house beyond our original estimated date of May 22. We'll post further updates on that in the near future.

Aside from the tremendous number of players simultaneously logging in to the game, one of the launch-day service issues was linked to the achievement system. Some players began to notice early on that achievements were either not being earned properly, or not being saved between multiple logins. We're investigating this issue and will provide a specific update as soon as possible.

We greatly appreciate everyone's support, and we want to sincerely apologize for the difficulties many of you encountered on day one. Please visit the Battle.net Support site or Support forums for the latest service-related updates or for help in troubleshooting any technical issues you may be having downloading, installing, or while playing the game.

Thank you again for your patience while we reinforce the gates of Sanctuary and further strengthen it for your onslaught.

Respectfully,Blizzard Entertainment

Whew. I feel much better now. Don’t you guys?

It doesn't matter what the reason is for their crappy DRM. The fact remains they simply did not have enough resources to handle it = fail.

Well, if they had actually listened to the wow forums about merging servers, they could have dedicated more servers to D3.

WoW has a lot of under utilized resources.

It is not DRM, you stupid fucktards, it is full online logic. Same as in any MMO. Why there's no IQ test before letting people post on internets? Preferably with corporal punishment for retards.

Diablo II era:
Players: Oh Blizzard, why there's hackers everywhere?
Blizzard: We hear you, next time we will control all logic on our side to ensure consistency.
Players: Yay.
Fast-forward to Diablo III:
Players: Y DID U DO ALWAYS ONLINE? WE KNOW, FOR EVIL DRM! QQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Diablo is not an MMO, it is a hack'n'slash, action RPG.

Also, if they just wanted to reduce hackers/cheaters to appease the multi player community, they could have allowed offline single player still.

However, that isn't the case, so it must not be to appease the players, and your point is invalid.

So, yes, evil DRM!

I thought even the single players got to benefit from the store? I think not allowing them to participate would have caused an equal amount of black lash.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Main issue is the character customization is dead. D2 had great customization. If they change this, everything would be great!

Login issues is just a secret way of gloating "haha that many people bought our game".

I like the game, but I want customization back. The lag will be fixed eventually... doesn't matter to me since I work in the day.

This is annoying as hell. Battle.net is down for maintenance so I can't log in and play.

I couldn't care less about the online parts of the game!

Why can't they just make it so if we want to use the auction house or play multiplayer we have to log in as and when needed?!

I just want to play it offline already!

always online DRM sucks and it makes the game fail from the start.
Thats the first thing the hackers remove so why have it there in the first place? To stop hackers? Your just encouraging them.

I've seen the game tonight and it looks just like D2 so after 10+ years I would expect it not to look like a game 10 years old. FAIL.

There is NO way I will be buying this at all. It looks way outdated and its got always online DRM.
It will fail quickly and people will go elsewhere for their fun.
