It's been a big year for gaming. 2011 has probably been the best year of gaming since 2007 and it's still got another 25 days to go...less so till Christmas. But with Christmas comes money and happiness and the big jolly guy in red, so let's hear some of the great stories over the Black Friday period.
In the Indie category of things, Frozen Synapse by Mode 7 recently came out saying they had moade over $300 000 in direct gaming sales. The tactical shooter is a hell of a lot of fun to play and was a labour of love for the creators. I'm sure being part of a humble bundle help, but Mode 7 insist that their paid-for-beta, shot them over a hundred grand like Mojang's model. Over the past fortnight they sold a few hundred more copies on their site during their own Black Friday/Cyber Monday rush.
Meanwhile in the land of the free and home of the brave, the XBox 360 has had their best week of 2011 and it's all thanks to Black Friday...well that and selling almost a million consoles in just under a week. Actually 800,000 of those consoles were sold in 24 hours in Black Friday. Of those eight hundred, seven hundred and fifty thousand took home Kinects, which will probably lead to a great Christmas for many kids. Also to put that 750 thousand in comparison, in Japan, the Kinect has only sold 114 thousand in it's entire run.
And last and certainly not least, EA Games has had a great month shipping over twelve million copies of Battlefield 3 since it's release in October. This, however, does not include sales by Origin, which EA have been quite tight lipped about. The sales will hopefully trickle over into the Christmas period. I'm thinking that for video game sales, it's best to just save up your money and then wait for the excess stock to drop in price.
You can always lay-away for stuff or even just check online. The cheapest thing however that I've seen in the pre-christmas rush is Dead Rising 2: Off the Record for $30...I feel like that will be my personal christmas gift.
