BioWare Explains Random Old Republic Bans

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a popular game, and players are getting quite angry at being ‘randomly’ banned.

‘Randomly’ is a bit harsh, considering the players were visiting a planet, Ilum, and looting containers there, but the real reason is a bit deeper.

Long story short, the planet Ilum is only advised for players of a certain level, though you can go at an earlier level. But the containers, however, are only meant for the higher level players, and opening them can cause a warning or temporary suspension, but not a ban. The bans were handed out for gold mining, says The Old Republic community manager Stephen Reid, who claims that use of exploits, including opening the containers, could result in damaging the in game economy.  Apparently accounts were used to take advantage of exploits to ‘maximize their credits’ and then sell them to other players.

Why people would bother potentially jeopardizing their online experience of an online game which they paid for is beyond me, but I guess that adds to the allure of ‘breaking the system’ and ending up on top of the virtual economy.

Have you encountered anything like this when playing the game?

This is nonsense. Players aren't glitching or hacking; they're taking advantage of a situation Bioware should have spotted.

Devs can patch it out, but they should suspend players for spotting a weakness in their design.

I'm with Foster on this. Players shouldn't be burdened with giving up tactical advantages to accommodate the developer's incompetence.

spotting a weakness and reporting it to the devs is a bit diff from spotting a weakness and taking advantage of it for personal gain. I believe they deserve some wrist slapping :/

Just patch the shit and fix it don't ban players, I've never heard of any other MMO doing this. Bioware is supposed to be such an amazing dev, yet they are punishing their players for doing stuff they left open.

You must not play many mmo's as they all have this policy. You exploit the bug to benefit from it you deserve the consequences for cheating. Most mmo's if you take the time to read the contract you signed tells you they will punish you cheating and exploiting bugs.
