Reports of BioWare's Dragon Age II using the controversial SecuROM DRM system surfaced earlier this week courtesy of a consumer rights group calling themselves "Reclaim Your Game". The group has taken to informing consumers of their findings by sending out the following statement:
"We have CONFIRMED from testing that it DOES contain SecuROM, and that it DOES leave files behind. We can also confirm that nowhere on the package, in the EULA or on the Website for the game is thee [sic] ANY mention of the inclusion of SecuROM. EA had been ordered by the courts to disclose the use of SecuROM on any game that uses it. And it is contradictory of what Bioware has been saying for the last 3 weeks."
Both BioWare, who has reportedly promised before that the game wouldn't use SecuROM, and publisher Electronic Arts have taken a bit of a PR hit with the issue, but according to the developer things aren't what they seem.
"We use Sony Release Control which shares some functionality with other Sony products (SecuROM), but we do not use SecuROM for the DRM," BioWare’s live team technical producer Derek "CrushBug" French said in a Blue's News forum post. "Once the Sony Release Control check is passed, Release Control self-destructs, removing the Release Control wrapper and it is never used again."
Other users claimed further that the DRM is still a running process and remains in both the user's registry and HD, but French clarified that there is no running process once Sony Release Control unwraps and self-destructs. Yes, there's still evidence o fit in the registry and HD, but the former is inert and does nothing while the latter is in a temp folder that is never referenced again.
"This part is sloppy and should be cleaned up, though," French added regarding the remaining registry entry and the temp folder. "We will see about doing that in a patch."
