The USK is a funny rating system, as funny as German's can be, and while I'm an Australian and our rating system is as upside down as our location on the world map, I feel like we need someone to make fun of with our wacky censorship laws.
It was reported last night by Edmund McMillen, creator of Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac and star of Indie Game The Movie, on his Twitter feed. He was discussing the retail versions of his games, both past and present, when he was notified that the game had skipped German's rating from their usual teen rating 12, to the quite adult, 16+. The reason?
Blasphemy.
Now, I see where the rating board is coming from. For the non-religiously inclined, the title refers to the Old Testament story of the religious man, Isaac taking his son and killing him, all because God said so. The proposed killing turns out to be just a test and everyone has a hearty laugh. The game itself does mock or at least reference casually to the batshit insanity that is the Old Testament, but ultimately it is a reference and a story and not a large comment on religion...just people who follow things blindly.
So while Mr. McMillen said he was not going to challenge the USK rating system or retry and is glad that the game is being released.
What other games do you think should be based on old testament stories? I'd love a whole tale of Job story that is told in a Ninja Gaiden style of gameplay. Again for those who don't know "the Bible" it is a story of a man who goes through a series of hardships including the death of his family, starvation and dealing with things that look like dinosaurs (Behemoths)...why? All for a test. Maybe the German's are testing us all.
I find these international fights quite interesting and that hopefully I can take the piss out of the rating system, because of how terrible ours is...
