Avalanche Studio offers PC piracy solution: "make better games"

Avalanche Studios boss Christofer Sundberg, the man behind the “Just Cause” game series, has offered his solution to the rampant PC piracy problem, try making better games, scrap the "stupid" DRM and give hackers a job.

justcause2_1

“Piracy is always worrying. It’s never been a helpful thing – we’ll let our publishers fight that battle," he told CVG. "But I mean, 50 per cent of the people that work for me come from a hacker background.”

When asked if he felt hackers made good programmers, Sunberg said: “I absolutely think that's a fair approach, to think about how these people can fit on the right side of the law. It's one way, at least. Perhaps the truest pirates are too much down the road of anarchy to ever work with you in a proper way; these are the guys who see us as evil!

"But in Sweden the [hacking] scene was huge... As a studio, we've found that there's definitely a lot of talent [in that community]."

Sundberg was never been a big fan of DRM and called it a "useless" measure to combat piracy.

"The DRM does not stop piracy," he said, "it just punishes the people who have actually paid for the game. It's completely useless. Forcing people to be online all the time and so on doesn't show respect to the people who actually buy PC games."

Instead, he believes that the best way to approach the problem is to make better, exclusive PC games that will be powered by constant updates and DLC.

"We've always made PC games, but we actually don't like [porting games from console to PC]," said Sundberg, referring to Just Cause games.

"I've always been of the opinion that we should design PC games for the PC players. PC players and console players are completely two different types of consumer. It's always unfair to not design the game for the consumer you're targeting. The PC version is always a second thought [for publishers], like: 'Oh, and we need a PC version too.'

"You end up just doing a port, so there's not a lot of time, budget or creative thinking going into using the PC. I think that's quite sad. We [as an industry] should take the PC platform more seriously. Everyone is just complaining about piracy on the PC, but when it comes to in-game DLC or social connectivity, the options on PC compared to console are endless. I would like at some point to do a really good PC game designed specifically for PC players."

He concluded: "I think piracy wouldn't be as much of an issue if there were better PC games out there. We could just scrap the whole concept of stupid DRM."

I agree.

Another thing I think devs should do is release demos (both sp and mp) of their games, that way you lose the "try before you buy" excuse.

Finally, don't charge console prices for games on launch, ive seen allot of complaints come from that on forums

Piracy will always exist, but I think the industry rather than punishing legit consumers should be trying to convert pirates instead. If anything heavy drm can prevent sales (I would have bought ac2 by now if it wasn't for it's drm).

That just isnt true. very rare have I bought a game after a demo but Ive bought quite a few after illegally downloading them. I very much doubt Im alone

as for DRM. that makes the problem worse. its like telling a child no, they want to do it even more. this is something that truly is human nature.

"PC players and console players are completely two different types of consumer."

It's true, the games on consoles have to be dumbed down because of the hardware limitations.

In an FPS game, a controller console gamer vs a PC k/m gamer, who'd win? PC gamer.

Games on 3DS are going to suffer because of not having a 2nd analogue stick thus far they will have to also dumb down the AI, to make it easier.

Musev, you're still eating dog shit? Poor kid.

I hate to say this, but I'm a pc gamer, and I'm still faster on a controller than the mouse in FPS games.

in general i think most prefer mouse and kb. though it is rare, some people do find the console controllers better because they are more acclimated to them. i get on a console controller and i suck ass. i say, to each his/her own. i'm not going to tell someone they are wrong for their preferences.

Definitely different. Most PC gamers enjoy modding and using the keyboard and mouse. Most console gamers prefer controllers and... oh wait I believe that's it. Being a console gamer, I can't use M/K to play. I agree with this guy's logic a lot, but can't help but feel that he's just saying this so you'll buy his games.

wow, a smart dev.
I agree 100% with this guy.
DRM is the stupidest thing they've ever done for games. All they are doing is punishing the buyer, the pirate will always get around protection so its useless.
If the game was worth it then people would buy it. If there was no crappy copy protection in it then it will also sell more.

Think about it, what was the most pirated PC game? Spore. Why? DRM.
What was the 2nd most pirated game? Sims 3. Why? DRM.

remove DRM and there will be more buyers as they will no longer be punished for buying a game.
Make better LONGER games and there is more reasons to buy the game. These days games that take 3 hours to finish is not worth buying. I'm taking about Kilzone 3, Homefront, Bulletstorm, COD Black Ops and Medal Of Honor.

Make LONGER games like GTA, Just Cause, Dragon Age, Assassins Creed, Hitman, Fallout and God Of War.

Small, expensive games are stupid. Would you go to the cinema and pay $100 to watch a movie? NO, then why charge us that much for a game that lasts about the same time?

From a gamer to a dev, drop the price, make the game longer and worth buying then you will see a decline in piracy and more sales.
