Amazon to offer Preordering for Digital Game Downloads

Digital download services for games seem to be the flavour of the month in recent times, with Steam, Direct2Drive, EA's Origin, Gamestop and a host of other independent services now occupying the space.

Amazon, however, has the network infrastructure and company size to actually make a shot at becoming a major player.

To begin with, only a small amount of titles will be available, but it has been hinted that they will be up to 30% lower than the physical title list price.

Personally, I need to see real numbers, so here they are

Assassin's Creed Revelations [Download] = $34.99 (List price is $49.99)
Battlefield 3: Limited Edition [Download] = $41.99 (List price is $59.95)
Sims 3 Pets: Limited Edition [Download] = $31.99 (List price is $39.99)
Heroes of Might & Magic VI [Download] = $39.99 (List price is $49.99)

Moving past the fact that EA's marketing team appears to like adding the words 'Limited' and 'Edition' to nearly every title they are pumping out lately (stranger still that they are pulling titles from Steam, but adding them to Amazon?), there are definitely some savings to be had here on new titles.

For titles that I am a little unsure of, digital download appeals, I don't want to get a dud and the price points of <$50 makes it easier to forget by simply deleting the game.

I can't help but wonder about the death of the video game box, holding that strange smelling, colorfully printed box in hand after a long wait felt like an achievement in itself.
