QJ: Some people may not be familiar with Size Five Games. How did you guys start up?
DM: It’s just me, actually. All alone in my home office, tapping away at a keyboard. However, I rope in talented freelancers to do various bits and pieces for me (like the code and art for Privates, which was done by the Project Zomboid chaps).
Size Five started as a hobby- I made Ben There, Dan That! and Time Gentlemen, Please! in my spare time around my day job. When Privates came along, TGP was ready to ship and I had this massive scary contract with Channel 4 looming on the horizon, so I took the plunge into full time game development. I’ve never been happier.

QJ: So from that scary contract came Privates. What was your main goal with Privates? Are you working on any sequel or follow up?
DM: The main goal I guess was to teach some teenagers a thing or two about where they should or should not be sticking their private parts. It’s quite a warm, fuzzy feeling to know you’ve done something socially worthwhile with your time, you know? Privates dispels a few myths about sex and pregnancy, so it’s nice to think some kid out there’s got the right idea because they’ve played the game.
I don’t think there’s going to be a sequel any time soon – I’m busy (and happy) working on The Swindle, and wouldn’t want to stop.
QJ: Tell us about The Swindle. What sort of game is it going to be?
DM: The Swindle is about cybercrime in a Steampunk setting. It’s a platform game, at heart. Think Sonic – the controls are closely modelled on a Sonic sort of handling. But the game itself is much more complex – instead of running left to right to finish a level, you’re tasked with infiltrating a building, hacking computers, and breaking out again. How you do it is kind of up to you – you can upgrade your kit to be stealthy, or action-y or whatever. It’s still very early in development, but shaping up nicely.
