There is something I never thought I'd be saying. I interviewed a BAFTA Award winner. While some may look down at the games industry from their crumbling pedestal called film, Britain still has the best idea. Of course, they're the home of RARE and Rockstar Games, but even then, when a free Indie game, that was banned from XBLA wins best game, this says something to the industry.
The person saying that something is Dan Marshall. The creator of indie titles, Ben There Dan That, Time Gentlemen Please and of course, the BAFTA award winning, Privates, I sat down to talk to Lord Marshall, as we now have to call him, about what he thought about the games industry and who he forgot to thank in his BAFTA speech.
QJ: Despite that opening that probably didn't have a lick of objectivity or humility, I may know who you are, just tell our readers who you are and how long you've been working on games?
DM: Hello! I run Size Five. I’ve been making games for a few years now, from loveable point-and-click adventure games Ben There, Dan That! and Time Gentlemen, Please! to the preposterous but BAFTA-winning sex ed shoot-‘em-up Privates.
QJ: Now Privates is an STD shooter, as it's been described by a bajillion news outlets, but where did the inspiration for Privates come along?
DM: I’ve no idea, really. I was at work doing my (then) day job, thinking around the idea of how to do a sex ed game, and suddenly started thinking how funny it’d be to have a sort of frightfully-British Gears of War pastiche, this these tiny soldiers going into peoples’ rude bits and shooting infections. It just sort of grew from there.
QJ: With the BAFTA award, were you hoping to win? What was the best reception/praise you got on the night?
DM: The great thing about swanning around with a BAFTA in your hands is it gives you free reign to go up to pretty much anyone and say hello. I met Nigel Planer, who played Neil in The Young Ones. He was massively influential to me, and the sort of comedy I write now is directly influenced by the sort of things he was doing in the 80s. He said Privates looked “really funny”, and my heart melted.
