ARMA II Developers respond to "Terrorism Footage"

Ó

For those of you who missed it last week:

ITV, a British TV station, commissioned a documentary about the history of terrorism and had several talking heads speaking about the technology and some how during their discussion about the Irish terrorist group, the IRA, a bit of footage from Bohemia Software's ARMA II sneaked in.

I actually contacted the developers to ask if they had any idea their game was being used in the documentary or if they had been contacted at all. I mean, the game itself should not feature in a clip containing the quote of it being real "IRA training footage from 1988".

Marek Spanel, CEO of Bohemia had this to say on the matter: "We were not aware of this at all. It is very weird to see our game used this way especially considering the journalists were simply unable to tell difference between reality and game footage and described a short film clearly made using our game Arma II with what they call real IRA footage from 1988," the oddness was not lost on Mr. Spanel and the creators of the game.

"Our games offer great level of freedom to our users to create all kind of things but in this particular case, it is very misleading. Plus it is surprising ITV did not seek for permission to use our game in this way,", whilst this is not just a bit of faux journalism, it also may be a bit of a copyright issue as ITV is a fairly commercial station and was broadcast during a period where advertisements were being shown.

"At the moment we are gathering further information about the matter but I already had chance to see the documentary and so far I am not sure how could they make such obvious mistake", it just seems like laziness from the doco makers part, but Spanel was quite humble about the matter. "On somewhat more positive note, we consider this as a bizarre appreciation of the level of realism incorporated into our games."

I actually asked permission if I could use this interview in an article and thank Bohemia Software greatly for their time to email us.

I don't like the POV sections but I do like stuff like this, when QJ has some original journalism that's legitimately informative. Nice work.

I thought I'd change it up you know, actually want to be taken somewhat seriously with my analysis. Better have the facts to back it up. I just hope it catches on, I would love to hear ITV's reaction.
