Intel to offer overclocking insurance |
Listed in: Hardware Tags: Intel, intel core, overclocking, performance tuning cover

Intel has decided to launch a pilot program that will offer one-time replacements for any CPU's damaged by overclocking. Yes, finally intelligence has caught up with the industry as most people will buy computing power and stretch it's limit to run faster games or to make things run smoother. However, in that process, sometimes things go astray and as you are tweaking the clock speed and adjusting the hundreds of hertz and things might start to smell like burning plastic.
For anywhere between $20 for a simple i5 to $35 for a full i7 tank you can choose where you need to be on the carefully worded "Performance Tuning Plan" to cover you when things start to catch fire or burn out. The one-time replacement offer is for CPU's damaged by overclocking as standard warranties tend to not cover this. It is a relatively cheap path to a peace of mind most computer tinkerers and PC Gamers would love to have.
However, there are clearly outlined limits such as " damage to the eligible processor due to external causes, including accident, problems with electrical power, abnormal electrical, mechanical or environmental conditions, usage not in accordance with product instructions, misuse, neglect, alteration, repair, improper installation or improper testing"...is not covered. Despite the fact that you could easily describe Overclocking as 90% of these things I'm starting to think there may be a problem in the near future for Intel purchasers.
This is a genius move of marketing as hundreds of thousands of people will buy Intel products and then fork out another $30 or so dollars just to test out the overclocking speed and any other major awesomeness that can be gained for messing with your PC. The fact they've limited it to a one-time offer is good and financially viable for them but also it'll be interesting to see how it plays out or if they get screwed in the end by doing this.

I'm sorry you don't know what overclocking is but only stupid people could describe 90% of those things as overclocking. Those clearly indicate 2 intentions, they aren't going to replace CPUs that are installed incorrectly and they aren't going to replace a CPU screwed up in a power surge. So thats why its important you know what you are doing when installing cpu's and that you use a quality power supply connected to a proper surge protector. But none of those things listed have anything to do with overclocking. This is a good move by intel as these days, you practically have to try to get your cpu fried. The failure rate on these CPUs are so low that you could easily say the low cost of this protection plan is a display of confidence by intel in the quality of their product.

1. It would be very hard to blow up a CPU from overclocking. You would have to push it to it's extreme OR have hardly any cooling at all. Anyone pushing their CPU to this extreme can probably light a match to a $100 bill and not give a crap.
2. Intel already has a 3 year warranty and over the course of....ah hell, I don't even remember anymore! After many many many years I've had to replace maybe a hand full of CPUs and Intel replaces them under their warranty with no questions asked. If it's bad, they replace it, as long as it's not physically damaged.
3. CPUs hardly ever go bad so you can categorize this "insurance" as making you "insurance poor".
