The Art of Video Games 2012 Exhibition

The exhibition will explore the first forty-years of evolution of video games as an art, primarily focusing on the development of visual effects and use of new technologies.

The museum invited the public to help select the video games to be included in the exhibition. The 240 games on the ballot were selected by Chris Melissinos, who worked with the museum and an advisory group consisting of game developers, designers, industry pioneers, and journalists. 


The games were selected based on a variety of criteria, including visual effects, creative use of new technologies, how the game fit into the narrative of the exhibition, and how world events and popular culture influenced the message of the game. 
Voting took place between February 14 and April 17, 2011. More than 3.7 million votes were cast by 119,000 people in 175 countries!

There were 80 games selected for the exhibition, they include titles such as:

 

  • Diablo II
  • Donkey Kong
  • DOOM II
  • Fallout
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Goldeneye 007
  • Halo 2
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Minecraft
  • SimCity
  • Star Fox
  • Super Mario 64
  • Super Mario World
  • The Legend of Zelda (including Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, & Twilight Princess)
  • Tomb Raider
  • Worms Armageddon

The exhibition will take place on the 3rd floor North of the America Art museum and starts on March 16th, 2012.

Whoa, I certainly did not expect to see Einhander in that list. I'd have thought it would be R-Type or something.
