With the increased popularity of internet gaming, local multiplayer is often a feature excluded from games of the modern era. It's a sad thing to think about for enthusiasts that once lived to compete in living rooms on a single machine, but it appears that independent dev teams will still have you covered. Sportsfriends is a game that is exclusively local multiplayer, and has gotten quite a bit of attention from Minecraft creator, Notch.

Essentially how Sportsfriends operates is through the inclusion of four independent competitive games in a single developed package. In total, the object of all of these mini titles is to get gamers into interacting with their friends within the same physical space without too much hassle. While all the games involved certainly draw from the fast-paced and point based nature of the sports that inspired them, this is absolutely a title for the masses that requires no prior knowledge of other common games.
The games included are Johann Sebastian Joust, BaraBariBall, Super Pole Riders, and Hokra, and they will be released as one game for PS3, PC, and Mac. Joust in particular piqued my interest by allowing users to get a little more use out of the somewhat defunct Playstation Move. Apparently Minecraft's Notch also agrees with me given that he has pledged a full $8,000 to push the project along. This has helped the indie effort to reach its $150,000 fundraising goal to bring a little more local multiplayer into our lives. The kickstarter project only has a few more hours left, but on the page you'll be able to see a detailed video of all these mini games in action.

Still I do love the idea of multiplayer coming back to the living room.
