NVIDIA Goes Portable With "The Shield" |
Listed in: Genre Tags: CES, nVidia, tegra 3, tegra 4 cpu
The race between consoles and PCs certainly is heating up these days with announcements coming from many unlikely sides of the aisle. First, we heard mentions of Valve developing living room PCs that utilize the Steam service, and today we get a major update from NVIDIA at CES showing us their own possible future in portable gaming that streams PC titles portably or to a TV.
You may have already heard that NVIDIA recently announced the Tegra 4 CPU this morning at CES. The new processor claims the best in mobile crown over anything in development right now, and claims to be six times more powerful than the Tegra 3 while using 45% less power than the previous iteration. However the announcements didn't stop there as the graphics giant also announced a new project code named "Shield." This Android-powered machine more or less looks like a console remote with a clam-shell screen built on the top, but it certainly has a lot of power under the hood. For processing, it will feature the Tega 4 as well as a 72Core Mobile GPU that is roughly on par with the Xbox 360 or Wii U.

So what is all this horsepower going to be used for? The console itself will not only be able to run apps from the Google Play store, but you will also be able to stream full PC games to the device with the option of using its 1280x720 HD screen or even a 4K television (assumingly through the on board HDMI port.) Also included are slots for USB and expandable memory as well. The demo showed full versions of Assassin's Creed III and Need For Speed: Most Wanted performing well on the device. Obviously since this is the first anyone has heard of "Shield" not much is known about price or release date, but we will certainly keep you posted when we learn more.

The other big issues with these phone consoles is games because it's not like mobile games are known for being must haves. However, with the ability to stream games from a pc, I may finally be able to have new vegas on the go, complete with all my mods.
