About two months ago, I gave you my hands-on impressions of Nintendogs from a special pre-E3 showing of the game. When it was quietly announced at E3 2004, no one thought much about the game, but as new details emerged, we became more and more intrigued. Of course, this bubbling interest soon came to a boil when the game was released in Japan to very strong sales and very positive reviews (including a rare 4 perfect 10’s from Famitsu) – it even sold systems.

So what’s all the fuss about? Recently, I was able to go hands-on again with the Dachs & Friends Japanese version of this dog simulation, and after extensive play time, I can tell you all the praise is certainly not unwarranted. Nintendogs is clever, cute and addicting. Obviously, Nintendo sees great potential for the game here too; though Nintendo was originally planning on releasing just one version in North America, whereas three were released in Japan, their plans have since changed, and the company will even be including three dog breeds that weren’t in the Japanese version.

But could it be the big system seller Nintendo is looking for?

Game Features

    - Pick from more than 15 of the most popular dog breeds, including Labradors, Chihuahuas, beagles and more, then care for and train the puppy using the touch screen and microphone.
    - Pet the pup, acquire and play with more than 100 items like tennis balls, flying discs and even clothing accessories. Teach your dog to do tricks by creating your own personalized voice commands.
    - Train your pups well and compete in obedience and agility trials. Win these competitions to earn cash, which you can use to buy supplies and even more dogs to keep your first puppy company.
    - Walk puppies around the town to meet neighborhood dogs or interact wirelessly with friends' Nintendogs using the innovative Bark Mode.

Nintendogs is perfect for the Nintendo DS, and it’s hard to put into words just how fun it is to play with the many different breeds of dogs on Nintendo DS. If this in-depth preview has sparked your interest at all in the game, trust me – you’ll love it. What I will say is that Nintendogs is a time consuming game, and it requires a lot of dedication – but while it may all sound silly, the amount of time you put into the game really does pay off.

August 22nd marks the release of what could be the best Nintendo DS game yet. Mark it on your calendars, and start agonizing now over what version to buy.
