Contrary to some earlier reports indicating sales of various UMD movies in the hundreds of thousands, Sony has recently announced that sales of UMD movies have topped 100,000 for all titles combined. This figure does not include Spider-Man 2, which was bundled with the first 1 million PSP units sold.

"DVD sales are flattening. Consumers already have bought all the film titles they want for their DVD. The publishers are looking for new ways to sell discs," Sony's European President Chris Deering told Reuters.

Though 100,000 is not a staggering amount, it is proof that there is a niche market for UMD movies within the 5 million current PSP owners around the world.

"The format has done well in its early stages," commented Ray Gagnon, Sr. Vice President Sales for Anchor Bay Entertainment, who recently announced their intent to bring Ninja Scroll, Evil Dead and four other movies to the PSP. "Our demographics match up very nicely with those of the PSP adopter and as such, we are confident our films will be successful on the UMD format. This slate is only the beginning from our company."
