PoV: Price cut can't save the 3DS

If there are no games available.

In a somewhat desperate move to counter the lackluster sales of its 3D-centric handheld, Nintendo announced yesterday that they are reducing the price of the 3DS from US$ 250 to US$ 170. The major price reduction of the handheld will start on August 12th, just five months after it was released.

While Nintendo justified the move as necessary in order to improve its struggling sales and even pre-empted a possible fan backlash by announcing a robust "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program," giving current Nintendo 3DS owners an oppurtunity to download ten NES games and ten Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games for free, the fact of the matter is that the handheld still lacks a good amount of games. A problem which Nintendo admitted.

"During the three months ended June 2011, for the Nintendo 3DS The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was launched and favourably received, but Nintendo had few other hit titles," said Nintendo in the press release.

"As a result, the worldwide sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and Nintendo 3DS software were 0.71 million units and 4.53 million units respectively."

The problem with the 3DS to start with is its weak launch lineup and its relatively high price tag. A move, which Nintendo clearly didn't anticipated and now, they are suffering the consequences. It's older brother, the DS, also started with similarly sluggish start. But it eventually clicked after a series of hit games that appealed to many users.

Nintendo has a long way to go to improve the current state of the 3DS and the upcoming price cut is a good start. Now, if only they can deliver a pretty solid lineup in the months ahead.

I don't think the price tag was the only concern for consumers. The non-existent battery life is also a big issue.

Battery life isnt the main issue for me the game price is! i mean even PS3/360 games cost less then 3DS games here!
Also the lack of second analog stick + small screen size (lots of space free on the side :o ) + use of stylus (seriously!!!) are the things Nintendo should have thought about. This isnt 1998 :)

with that said i own one and playing Zelda which is pretty fun but man i miss a second analog stick.

Lastly the 3D is rubbish rubbish rubbish! The second i turn it on everything is double and fuzzy no mater how i position myself. It worked much better when i played Splinter Cell but then again you can move an inch or the screen gets blurry!

I will for sure get more games but Nintendo could have made it so much better. Looking forward to see what PSV has to offer. I already like the gorgeous 5 inch OLED + dual stick.

Where in the world do PS3/360 games cost less than 3DS games? In the U.S. 3DS games have consistently been $39.99 or less on day one, whereas PS3 titles are $59.99 or less. And, no offense, but you're coming off as a little fanboyish.

No way! Dreamcast is the BEST!!! No console ever either in the past or now nor the future can ever beat it! Sales only dropped because of piracy. No other console has piracy so that proves it!

You're just jealous as you sit there with your stupid Wii and 360 and PS3 and 3DS and iPhone and iPad playing all those new games while you're missing out on the best games to ever be developed!!!

The ambassador program CAN save the 3DS. I told my brother about it and he's now thinking of getting one before the ambassador program deadline.
The more people that know about the free games and the price drop the more it will sell.
Either they want the free games or they want it at a cheaper price.
I think its a great deal. Either way its a win.

didnt the ceo of nintendo said it once not far after launch that we should "get one now because its gonna get more expensive later"... ha to see how it has turned around. but indeed its really lack tittles it can be said that one hit tittle every month or so, if the title is not postponed like mgs snake eater been postponed. but there are titles yet to be launched for it. i think they made a bad move by not having this great titles that are coming later in the year on launch day- i mean there was no title at least in the us, unlike in japan they got rpgs and all the same crap we got, at least they got jrpgs...as for now my 3ds gets dust inside a dresser draw...

I don't ever remember reading that, I'd be interested in seeing a link to that. That would be incredibly surprising for a company to raise the initial price of a system. Are you sure they didn't say to buy it now because it would be hard to find later?

"didnt the ceo of nintendo said it once not far after launch that we should "get one now because its gonna get more expensive later""

Yeah, I'm sure the CEO of Nintendo used the word gonna. Nice QUOTE you have there.

"as for now my 3ds gets dust inside a dresser draw..."

You have that must dust INSIDE the drawer? Jesus man, how about you clean once in a while!?!?!

Not to mention the word "get." Gonna get cheaper? What is this Texas? I'm surprised he didn't say "This dude from Intendo said they're gonna 'Git 'er Done!'"

Sales will pick up once it gets those good titles later this year and next and the dumb people start to realize that they won't work on their old DS systems and that the 3DS is no just another DS.

The price drop is great with me, but I'm still holding out for new colors!

This is definitely a smart move on Nintendo's behalf. It should increase the sales on the hardware side as well as on the software side.

Consumers just don't know about the free games. They are gonna hear about the price cut and get the console later. If they don't hear about the price cut, then they won't and may just end up not getting on.
Seriously, there are major flaws with the 3DS. First of all, the battery. Second, the lack of good and diverse games. Third, the 3D isn't that good, isn't viewable by 12% of the populace, and hurts some people. Fourth, there is no innovative or new technology for a gaming device in the 3DS except the 3D itself.

It's a good thing that the 3DS takes advantage of this little concept called notifications...

Reply

-1 # RE: ...Sucks 2011-07-29 15:13
You only get the notifications if you have the 3DS already. My little brother won't know to get the 3DS right now versus later. He just knows that the price cut is coming soon because his friend told him.
How is he supposed to be notified? He doesn't have a 3DS to be notified on.

And yes, I know I could tell him. This is an example.

The 3DS is a great piece of equipment. Battery life is not the obstacle to market success. The problem is that the current library of games pretty much sucks. If your best games are re-releases of 90s-era hits (Zelda, Street Fighter), you've got a BIG problem.

Once the new Mario Bros. and Mario Kart games come out, everything will be fine. Once they get a new first-tier Pokemon game out (not Rumble, Ranger, etc.) then there will be no problem at all.

As an owner of a 3 month old 3ds, I already am happy that I will receive 20! I mean 20 FREE games! So having the 3ds not having games is just a ridiculous assumption when Mario Kart 7 and Super 3d Mario land has just been confirmed to come out this year.
In canada, the 3ds will be a hot commodity this weekend since its slashed by $50.00. So you can get your 20 exclusive free games too!

20 Free games that I have already bought before, still own, and could emulate on everything I own.

Not to mention, these games will no doubt be tied to your 3DS only so you won't be able to play them on your Wii as well.

Of course, the 3ds is not for everybody. But anyone who has not played these classic games would sure want to get the 3ds now with the $50.00 discount at stores. Me, I enjoyed my 3ds since I missed out Ocarina of time when I was a kid without a job and other classics. I can emulate these games but its different when its portable.

I think that unless the 3DS gets more games besides Zelda, Mario, etc. A price-cut, program, and otherwise won't save it.

Yes, it's absolutely possible 3DS will only get Mario, Zelda, etc{.} It's not like we don't already have 2 Resident Evil titles, a Street Fighter game, and Metal Gear Solid{.}

I won't buy a 3DS for the same reason I won't buy a DS... it's crap. no amount of price adjustment will save it in my opinion.

The biggest problem that portables are facing are smart phones. you can get games between free and $2 usually instead of the 40 for portables.

another problem is that vita/3ds were the same price. if i could only buy one i would get the vita.

mario, zelda games dont cut it anymore, nintendo need some more third party support for me to purchase any of there consoles again. nintendo is no were nears as bad as MS with there yearly fable and halo games but they need new ips, with third party support.

The problem is that Nintendo left the launch up to third parties and third parties left Nintendo to dry. The 250 dollar price was a lot, but the fact that there are so few games out for it now is really killing it. Once we get the good first party Nintendo games, sales will pick up. Hopefully Nintendo learns from this and prices the Wii U no higher than 350 and has AAA titles out at or close to launch.

DSs low price saved it, and it didnt have games for years. So yes, yes it will save the 3DS.
