PoV: Price cut can't save the 3DS |

If there are no games available.

In a somewhat desperate move to counter the lackluster sales of its 3D-centric handheld, Nintendo announced yesterday that they are reducing the price of the 3DS from US$ 250 to US$ 170. The major price reduction of the handheld will start on August 12th, just five months after it was released.
While Nintendo justified the move as necessary in order to improve its struggling sales and even pre-empted a possible fan backlash by announcing a robust "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program," giving current Nintendo 3DS owners an oppurtunity to download ten NES games and ten Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games for free, the fact of the matter is that the handheld still lacks a good amount of games. A problem which Nintendo admitted.
"During the three months ended June 2011, for the Nintendo 3DS The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was launched and favourably received, but Nintendo had few other hit titles," said Nintendo in the press release.
"As a result, the worldwide sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and Nintendo 3DS software were 0.71 million units and 4.53 million units respectively."
The problem with the 3DS to start with is its weak launch lineup and its relatively high price tag. A move, which Nintendo clearly didn't anticipated and now, they are suffering the consequences. It's older brother, the DS, also started with similarly sluggish start. But it eventually clicked after a series of hit games that appealed to many users.
Nintendo has a long way to go to improve the current state of the 3DS and the upcoming price cut is a good start. Now, if only they can deliver a pretty solid lineup in the months ahead.

Also the lack of second analog stick + small screen size (lots of space free on the side
with that said i own one and playing Zelda which is pretty fun but man i miss a second analog stick.
Lastly the 3D is rubbish rubbish rubbish! The second i turn it on everything is double and fuzzy no mater how i position myself. It worked much better when i played Splinter Cell but then again you can move an inch or the screen gets blurry!
I will for sure get more games but Nintendo could have made it so much better. Looking forward to see what PSV has to offer. I already like the gorgeous 5 inch OLED + dual stick.

Where in the world do PS3/360 games cost less than 3DS games? In the U.S. 3DS games have consistently been $39.99 or less on day one, whereas PS3 titles are $59.99 or less. And, no offense, but you're coming off as a little fanboyish.

lol, yea, I enjoy having the obvious stated to me.
"POV - Dreamcast sales lagging in 2011 due to lack of production."

You're just jealous as you sit there with your stupid Wii and 360 and PS3 and 3DS and iPhone and iPad playing all those new games while you're missing out on the best games to ever be developed!!!

The more people that know about the free games and the price drop the more it will sell.
Either they want the free games or they want it at a cheaper price.
I think its a great deal. Either way its a win.

Seriously, there are major flaws with the 3DS. First of all, the battery. Second, the lack of good and diverse games. Third, the 3D isn't that good, isn't viewable by 12% of the populace, and hurts some people. Fourth, there is no innovative or new technology for a gaming device in the 3DS except the 3D itself.

How is he supposed to be notified? He doesn't have a 3DS to be notified on.
And yes, I know I could tell him. This is an example.

Once the new Mario Bros. and Mario Kart games come out, everything will be fine. Once they get a new first-tier Pokemon game out (not Rumble, Ranger, etc.) then there will be no problem at all.

In canada, the 3ds will be a hot commodity this weekend since its slashed by $50.00. So you can get your 20 exclusive free games too!

NICE!!!

Not to mention, these games will no doubt be tied to your 3DS only so you won't be able to play them on your Wii as well.
