Stastics from the NPD Group, who track video games sales throughout the United States have confirmed that more than 50 million DS units have been sold throughout the lifetime of the system.
Revealed within these figures are some even more promising figures for Nintendo about the potential longevity of the 3DS system.
- More than 260,000 Nintendos 3DS systems were sold throughout September 2011, an increase of 10% on the previous months.
- Since the price reduction of the 3DS on August 12, 2011, an additional 450,000 systems have been sold.
- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D became the first 3DS title to ever sell more the 500,000 units in the U.S.
- In September 2011, Nintendo sold a total of 647,000 systems (Wii, DS, 3DS)
Nintendo's total software units sold (273 million) in the United States equates to having sold over 107,000 games per day, every day, for the last seven years.
The uptake in sales of the 3DS from the August 12 price reduction, which lowered the price from $250 to $180 appears to have done the trick, helping Nintendo remain on top of the hand-held gaming market.

Right in time for Christmas, Nintendo is soon to release Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS, which should produce an ever bigger increase in system uptake before the end of 2011.
