March NPD: Pokemon, DS leads the charts

The US-only tracking firm NPD Group has released its video game industry sales figures for the month of March 2011, and we got the numbers, right down below.

According to the latest date, hardware sales was up this month compared to last year, thanks to the debut of the Nintendo 3DS. Software sales on the other hand slowed down a bit compared to last year—falling by 4 percent compared to the year-ago period. Combining sales of both hardware and software, the US video game industry drop 4 percent compared to a year ago, from US$ 1.58 billion to US$ 1.53 billion.

The Nintendo DS games Pokemon Black and White took home the crown for the best selling titles for the month, with Pokemon White moving 1.3 million units and Black with a total of 1.1 million units. "Pokemon White is the best-selling Pokemon SKU in its debut month at retail of any Pokemon to date, and the Black version is third. Combined they break previous sales records held by Pokemon Silver and Gold in October 2000," said analyst Anita Frazier.

Moving on to the hardware department, the Xbox 360 is once again the top selling console for the month with 433,000 units sold. What's interesting to note however is the sales of the Nintendo's handhelds, as the firm revealed that the original Nintendo DS actually outsold the 3DS, moving 460,000 units while 3DS sold just under 400,000 units for the month. Nintendo said that the Wii sold about 290,000 units while Sony decided not to give exact numbers.
