PoV: Handhelds in need of population control?

It was bound to happen, especially with the arrival of the new Nintendo 3DS.

It's official, the DS Lite has now been discontinued. Well, not exactly official official, as in Nintendo's openly announced it to the public. But this screencap from a supposed GameStop database claims as much.

So said the notification:

ds_lite_discontinued

"New DS Lite systems (020288/020283/020289) have been discontinued and stores will no longer be replenished on this product. Once your store sells through its current stock of these units, please remove any corresponding DS Lite (Crimson, Black, and Metallic Rose) display boxes from the sales floor and discard."

It was only a matter of time, really. But, the DS Lite did have a good run. More importantly, it made a lot of sales for Nintendo. The DS Lite wasn't the only one who bid us farewell, though. Sony also officially pulled the plug on the PSP Go just this week. And like what GameStop is doing, just finishing off the remaining units in stock, so is online retailer Amazon doing as well. And so we've got more obsolete consoles to add to our trash.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder what's the point of churning out all these new handhelds, with little, varying increments in changes and improvements. Most of them cosmetic at that.

The obvious answer, of course, is that it's a money-making venture. Kinda like how it works with downloadable content. Developers and publishers could have easily added in the content to the game, but they opt to hold on to some bits and trickle them out slowly, thereby prolonging their ability to rake in some more dough. That's for a different discussion altogether, though.

I guess what I'm saying is that there are way too many models coming out, and not all of them are being utilized to the fullest, technology-wise. It's a waste of resources, coming up with model A, B and C of the same unit. Just plunk down all the improvements at one time for a new handheld set for a release at a particular schedule, and then that's it. It's handhelds population control. We shouldn't have all those handhelds graveyards too anymore. I understand that technology does come and go quick, but that doesn't mean it should be marketed as something disposable.

It's not like they're the most recyclable items after all.

I'm surprised it was still being sold. I thought they would've stopped selling it after the DSi came out.

The last DS which had the capability of running GBA games is now dead, way to go Nintendo. :zzz

DSi and 3DS probably could've had a GBA port too but N didn't bother with it.

Why should they? GBA is dead. Are you also upset that the Wii doesn't have a NES or SNES cart slot?

10 years is enough. Time to move on.

who's the more foolish - the "money hungry" corporation who makes the product, or the "money foolish" idiots who rush out and buy every new iteration of the same device?

just because they release the same thing with little upgrade does not mean it needs to be bought, especially at full price.

Man, Nintendo makes too much money already with handhelds and concoles. Might as well recycle those handhelds and make something else out them. As for Sony, all I can say that they're struggling to beat Nintendo and other portable device manufacterurs with the NGP but will all know that can't happen.

My following comment is aimed at all consoles, not just Nintendo~

The DSi was/is a really cool console.
To bad it was discontinued...
Companies like Sony should really start listening to customers, and not be spending money on flip-phone frankensteins such as the PSP Go.

On a side-note:
"a gamer" will play anything, new or old.
He knows what a game really is about.
I am not talking about those gamer wannabes who spend 20hrs a day playing CoD.
(just pointing out I play it, but not as much as others)
I mean those who appreciate games for what they are.
The DSi is one of those systems with great games...
Long live the DSi!

Oops!, I meant to say DS Lite :D
I guess that I acted on impulse, since I have a DSi.

ladies and gentlemen of the jury, i present to you exhibits A, B, and C:
The apple iPod, the apple iPhone, and the apple iPad.

also known as: if you build it with very little difference, the idiots will still come and buy it.

Nah Apple's different cos they deliberately leave features out so you have to buy the next 1 just to get stuff even the cheapest Smartphones have as standard. I mean remember people blindly trying to defend the iPhone's lack of video recording, multitasking, crappy camera etc? Saying that's not what the iPhone's about, at least with consoles they give you all the features you need at a competetive price and they have to upgrade the hardware because you think people still want to buy the original shape NDS after 7 years, and same with all the other consoles.

The point is nintendo could wipe a booger in a box every week and nintendo fangirls would rush out to buy it.

(Where do they get all that money?)

Its Mucousmon!
