A Big Leap For Gaming |

Now this is something I personally am very interested in. If ya’ll want videogames to stand alongside film and music as an important medium for art and literature, then it’s these sort of movements that should make you feel a little warmer inside.

Curators at The British Library have now begun the process of archiving and preserving videogame websites to preserve gaming culture for future generations. Many people focus on hardware, things like hard drives, computers and discs, but The Library say that gaming websites ‘perfectly illustrate’ the impact of the videogames industry on society. And rightly so, I say!
Not just observations and commentary, but FAQ’s, gamer-drawn maps, reviews, pictures and stories that develop game narratives.
The National Videogame Archive, who have been archiving hardware are working with The Library on this one. Who knows, one day we may see our own comments on a forum printed somewhere or on display at some preservation museum. Even QJ may get a little mention.
James Newman, co-director of the National Videogame Archive says that videogames aren't just playing games; it involves writing about them, reviewing, debating, sharing strategies and tactics, making movies and all the social interaction we’ve been making with each other over the internet particularly in the last decade.
You can nominate sites to be archived over here. A good word for QJ wouldn’t hurt. Heh.
