In the latest issue of the "Nintendo Power" magazine Takashi Tezuka from Nintendo gets interviewed about the upcoming "New Super Mario Brothers" for the DS. In the interview it is revealed that it is not a Wi-Fi compatible game, however the game will still be a great adventure and will without a doubt sell like mad.

NP: Will we see any other beloved characters from the Mario universe, such as Yoshi, Toad, etc.? How about Bowser and the Koopalings?

TT:
All of the characters you mentioned will show up except for Yoshi (laughs). Because weÂ’re trying to get back to the spirit of the original Super Mario Bros., Yoshi doesnÂ’t really fit.
Some interesting info:
  • The story is set in the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • There will be no boss battles in two player mode.
  • This is not a Wi-Fi compatible game.
  • It will not use the microphone in any way.
Also from a recent Japanese magazine there's a few new screenshots. Our Japanese blogger is currently not online so we can't reveal what's said in the article, although I'm sure all the new screenshots will make up for it.

You said it's not a "Wi-Fi compatible game" but also that it has two player. Is there some kind of turn based pass-the-system type multiplayer (like in Super Mario 4 Advance) or did you just mean it's not online but local Wi-Fi compatible?

I'm sorry about this, it seems as though our source did not provide all the info from the magazine. I'll be keeping an eye out from all the upcoming press releases from Nintendo and previews from other websites and post about this once we know more.

No Yoshi? That's a pity he was an excellent addition to Super Mario World in my opinion. I'd prefer him to be in a Mario game to being in another Yoshi Story type game, as aside from the first one the sequels haven't been great.

To be fair, Nintendo is trying to get back to basics. (IE: The original SMB) The basics (the original) don't have Yoshi.
