DarkFader has recently issued a full apology and attempted explanation about the trojan he released for the Nintendo DS.  Here is what he had to say on his website:

I want to say sorry to everyone out there. I should have realized the impact. Not just few DS'es that were hurt, but all the damn media and whatnot. I cannot really justify my actions. It was also very selfish to draw some attention, which I tend to do in odd ways. It caused some harm to some non-targetted and targetted people owning a DS with non-Nintendo-approved hardware. And that is a terrible thing to do. Even more so with the reputation I had in the DS homebrew scene that now completely abandoned me.

I do not have clear reasons and I can't blaim the little headache I had at the time. I just had to realize the idea I had after seeing the PSP variant of a bricker. The files do not come with any form of name/signature of me, a thing I would do if it could be trusted. I won't release any more of this crap for DS and I don't think parts of this trojan or the idea itself will emerge in future homebrew releases. The point is probably clear. Do not run any form of untrusted code that just suddenly appears without any name.

If you only use official Nintendo games, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Untrusted code includes ROM loaders and that sort of stuff. It's probably not a very good reason since it has been proven before. I can tell that the negative feedback is far greater than the positive ones. I received one donation of $6.66 and I'm not proud of it. One news site completely ignores the r0mloader version and reasoning behind it. grrrrr. Another common mistake: A TROJAN IS NOT A VIRUS! That means that it does not propagate on its own. And thus non-intrusive.

But I think that is no excuse to forgive him because he wanted to apology when he knew it was wrong and he do it anyway ? I do not think I will accept his apology, man.

i can understand what i think a good reason behind the trojan was... but its still completely the wrong way to go with getting a point across. if you wanted to make a statement, make something awesome, im sorry for your new blackhat label Fader... im not sure if you'll ever be trusted again. im a forgiving person tho, i forgive what you did, do it again, and ill mash ya!!

Nintendo Sony thanks you. This is the kind of thing that keeps home brew games out of the hands of consumers.

Good job.

Translation of his 'apology':
----
I'm sorry that my reputation was ruined. Really, I feel bad about people ostracizing me, so much that I almost regret releasing my malicious software. Honestly, believe me, I never meant to hurt myself, and now that I have, I regret hurting myself. So much that I ALMOST promise not to release my malicious software in future releases.

BUT it's not really a problem because the people who use it are at fault, since they're not using official Nintendo games.
----
[clap clap clap] Good one, dude.

rofl...I don't go into evil hacking, but how are you ever going to find out how good a device is unless you fully play with it...we now know the PSP and the DS can be hacked, so in the end, even though it wasn't a good thing to do, we can possibly find ways of preventing other worms and virus in the future;) or something else good might come out of this.

I really do love how he always choses to ignore the Hentai version, which was not aimed at Pirates.
I guess darkfader has something against hentai lovers aswell?

i think the blame for the damage goes on the person who ran the unknown code on their DS. If you think for one second that you're not responsible for your own actions, think again. DarkFader didn't brick ANYTHING. (S)he gave you the means to do it yourselves, and you did. You each shot yourself in the foot, DarkFader did nothing of the sort.

You can't sue an automaker for a hit and run, but you can sue the driver.

All of you that bricked your own PSPs are the drivers in this scenario. Blame yourselves, because that's exactly where the blame belongs.

The only thing here worse than malware are the self-righteous pricks who can't take an apology. Get off your damn high horses, people, it's not you haven't done anything you later regretted - everyone has. (And if not, it's only because you're too conceited to actually admit wrongdoing.)

I was one of the people chastising Fader's actions. But now it sounds to me like some of you were deserving of bricks after all...

Abscissa, I've never gone out of my way to cause people misery. I apologize when I need to, because I do make mistakes. However, I've never been stupid/mean enough to wreck other people's property just to relay a message.

Jeremiah, if I build a reputation and then one day switch over to the dark side and screw over a bunch of people because they trust me, that's just wrong. Don't be an apologist. What he did was wrong.

A reputation lasts a lifetime, good job DarkFader.

People have to understand that that is the risk that they take when they make their devices run code that it was not intended to run. This is a good thing that will make people a little more carefull.

It would have happened sooner or later, intentional or not, and would have created the same effects. If you play with fire...

why take pleasure in destroying other peoples property ,is it some power trip that you just f***ked overa few hundred ds or have you had a nice backhander from nintendo to make public this malware some poor kids who have scraped their money together has now a very expensive paper weight nice going not we dont need more people like you i run a psp as well and enjoy finding new stuff out that works on the system and infact im not worried about gaming on these consoles more what applications they can handle its a rel shame that a handfull of hackers always f**k it up for thosands of others by releasing this sort of sh** hope your happy with yourself

I think every one that has posted a negative comment here should be a little more open minded. Especialy since you have lost something, not to say that making a virus or a trojan is acceptible. But grilling someone who has comeout and attemted an apology is in no way going to improve anything. When someone trys to make small amends for there actions and recieves this amount of critasism is does that make anyone else likely to try and make up for a mistake? I think everyone should learn a lesson from this and give a small thank you to DarkFader for opening everyones eyes to check if software is realy trust worthy before using it.

I used to respect what Darkfader did for DS development. To destroy other people's systems to "teach them a lesson" is a sick thing to do.

Strange, posted on Slashdot yet no spamming or trolls? Not yet anyway.

Personally I'd be mightily pissed if I'd had a DS bricked by this, but even so, he's apologised, so give him the benifit of the doubt. A second chance, as it were. If he does it again, then you ostracise him.

Actually what he has done is illegal and as such he can be and should be charged under mischief to data. He even went so far as to admit to the crime. Any website he has contact with who logged his IP should turn it over to the police immediately.
Maybe a little time in jail is what his sorry ass needs.

While I agree, some people needed this boot in the ass, maybe this was the wrong way to go about it. Perhaps a trick virus (like the old, Now erasing all files, now to shut down...wait ten seconds...Haha! April fools!) would be a better way to prove the point.

If you are stupid enough to load code that you know nothing about on your DS then an expensive paper weight is what you deserve. Go buy another one and next time don't be so stupid.

Jeremiah, automakers generally don't design cars that deliberately look for the nearest wall to crash into.

Darkfader has worked REALLY hard and done a LOT of good for the DS community. I've read a lot of his comments over at the NDS Dev forums at DS-Linux and he's a nice guy.

Please no one be mean to him, people slip up.

i total agree with you, yes Darkfader made a trojan, but that doesn't mean it is his fault you used it, you chose to risk your DS to play illegal things, that was up to you, anyway what kind of homebrewer are you if you download softwear with no tag name, you dumbasses lol severs you right, anyway back to play nintendogs!

"Forgive and Forget" That is what i'm gona do for him. He learned his lesson and has faced the consequences. He is a good guy who screwed up then did the right thing and said sorry to the masses. We all do really stupid things in life and we all know it. So if u don't forgive him, then you are a cold mother-fu@ker!
Besides, what we should really be focusing on, is the PSP bricker. That is what caused the entire thing in the first place!

Guys, let's forgive him! It's a good guy after all. All the DS homebrew scene is born thanks to him. He was only sad cos no one was ever thinking of him. So he thought that sumthin' would make people remember him. DarkFader i'm with ya! I trust ya, and i'll surely run a homebrew from you on my NDS cos this is SURELY a good and true apologizing.

G'bye!
