For Nintendo, the Gamecube was their next big thing.
The N64, was, and remains, one of the coolest consoles Nintendo put out.
The Gamecube had a lot to live up to!
The Gamecube was born just three days after the Microsoft Xbox hit the market and took away Nintendos ability to claim the Gamecube as the most powerful console on the market at the time.
It was more powerful than Playstation 2, who was 1 year older than the Gamecube, but the Playstation 2 found much more success in this new generation of console wars.
The Cube had to survive on a proprietary disc format, with Nintendo choosing to do away with their traditional cartridge style, in favour of their own mini disc format.
The Cubes controller also incorporated dual analog sticks, though the second was a little different compared to the main stick. No rumble features and the lack of DVD playback also hurt the chances of the Gamecube to become the biggest console of its time.
It wasn't all tears for the Gamecube however, with so many of Nintendo's classic game titles making their way over the new console and helping show just how powerful it was.
The Legend of Zelda (both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess) Metroid Prime (1 and 2), Super Smash Bros. Melee, are among some of the best games that were available on the Nintendo Gamecube.
You had games from third parties such as Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid and Star wars Rogue Squadron II, all of which had great success on the Gamecube.
The Gamecube eventually caught on to the online gameplay revolution, with Phantasy Star Online, after a modem addon could be purchased for the console.

The Gamecube was full on FAIL from start to end.
I was a Nintendo Fan back in the day and when i heard of the new system i was all happy.. Then info of the system started coming out... I got very made...
1. If your moving over to DVD formats then make them full size DVDs and make Movies playable.
2. A flash cart is BETTER, Im sorry but CDs/DVDs/ even blu-ray can't match the awesomeness of flash carts "When it comes to GAMES!!"
3. No good games AT ALL on the game cube... NOT one. Even the Mario Kart was fail with bad controls, On SSBB you fall to fast, There was NOOO real Zelda game... Not even going to comment on that wind waker crap.
The sad thing is.. What is sony doing.. OOoo look there going back to FLASH Carts, Flash cart games last forever, Never get scratched And with prices so low you can have a 8-16gig cart for like 8$-16$ and you know they are going to sell the games for like 60$

People hate just to hate. The gamecube was fun and had a bunch of good games.
I honestly believe all the hate came from the fact that it took so long to pirate on the console.
