Pokemon Company: 3DS is not easy to develop for

Not because of the code, but because of all the features available.

Pokemon Company revealed in an interview that it isn't so easy to develop software for the Nintendo 3DS.

"To be candid with you, the 3DS is not an easy platform to develop software on. Thinking about it another way, though, it's the kind of platform that really makes you want to delve into the feature set and figure out how to make fun things with it," said Tsunekazu Ishihara.

One such feature is network communication, which Ishihara says they've just gotten started with.

"The 3DS has two CPUs -- one devoted to the game, another devoted to network communication -- and until the June update, I'd say that the communication chip was sort of a work in progress. The update completed the package, so to speak, and now we can get full performance out of that CPU. The fact that these two CPUs work independently of each other is really important -- one can work all by itself without being bogged down by the other. I think taking full advantage of that is one of the keys to 3DS game development."

I thought the DS had two CPUs too.
ARM9 and ARM7 then they introduced a bit faster version of them in DSi & DSiXL later.

The 3DS rumored to contain Two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs. which is a quite nice upgrade from the DS.

But if you compare it to PSVita (4 core ARM Cortex-A9)

If the one core ARM Cortex-A9 is almost like 2.5 times faster than one core ARM11

So technically Vita is 8X times the computational power of 3DS.

That's of course theoretical, we don't know yet the CPU clock speed in the Vita.

Not to mention also, that -according to some rumors- only 3 cores are available for the developers and one is reserved fot the system and security.

I just want to add that ARM Cortex-A9 got fully backwards compatibility on code with ARM11.

So theoretically, Vita could emulate the 3DS easily.

or at least porting and cross platform games is going to be easy for developers.
