Nintendo will not make mobile games, says Iwata

It must have been quite a shock to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata when the company's stock prices fell after its Tokyo Game Show 2011 press conference. Even a franchise as huge in Japan as Monster Hunter apparently couldn't do a thing to placate worried stockholders and investors.

Analyst Mitsushige Akino believes that the new game announcements won't make a difference in the 3DS' slow start. The Ichiyoshi Investement fund manager further claimed that the very people that Nintendo had turned on to gaming with the Wii and DS have already abandoned them for mobile games.

Well, even if that were the case, Nintendo will not be going after that demographic by making games for the mobile gaming market. That's the steadfast stance delivered by Iwata in an interview with Japanese newspaper Nikkei.

"This is absolutely not under consideration," the Nintendo president said with what we can only imagine was a very emphatic expression. "If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo."

Iwata knows that Nintendo will make a lot of money in the mobile gaming space if they do decide to penetrate it, but he believes it isn't in line with mid- and long-term strategies that would ensure the company's competitive strength. Whether you think he's right or wrong, you've got to give the man credit for sticking to his guns.

Let's put it another way!!!

When the time comes when NINTENDO go almost broke because no one cares & buys their Hardware anymore (like me) then I guess they will have to release their games for other platforms that are still going strong (like SEGA).

The way things are goin' for Nintendo right now and the stupid decisions they are makin'....I give them less than 5 years till they are OUT of the game altogether (PUN intended)LOL!

Goodbye NINTENDO !!!!

Good because mobile games arent that impressive at all. I am stick with traditional games for consoles and portables only. Thank you very much.

I remember some post (here or some other site, can't remember) that Nintendo will not be releasing some first party games as support for devs. Now look at the effect of this move.

Meh I don't have a cell phone at all right now (except for an HD2 up in my closet) that's connected to any wireless carrier and I couldn't be happier. Dedicated gaming units are what I love. Stick to your guns Iwata that's where we like Nintendo at.

I have a new cellphone that plays the latest games yet I still game primarily on my 3DS (yep, that's right, PC and 360).

While cellphone games are getting closer to console quality, it's still not the same.
-I like not having to worry about draining my cellphone battery while gaming.
-I like having actual hardware controls (Xperia Play made a crappy attempt)
-I like having a "physical" media collection.
-I like not spending $500+ or getting stuck with a 3 year contract.
-I like having games that can take me almost a month or more to complete instead of a bus ride.

Smartphones are trying to do everything and I'm all for it but I think there is always space for dedicated gaming systems. Sega became a developer only and look what happened to them? The quality of their games became.. OK at best. They used to produce A titles like Nintendo. When you saw a game made by Nintendo or Sega, you knew it was going to be good. These first party games sold their respective systems for a reason.

I'm sure that if Nintendo made "APPS", they would probably cash in for now but guess what? Stockholders only care about money right now. Ask any stockholder to be patient and they'll dismiss you yet I'm sure when the Wii was selling like hotcakes,they loved them. I agree with Nintendo waiting long term. They've lived past Atari and Sega. They must be doing something right.

The most easiest solution is that Nintendo just needs to come out with a mobile phone with 3ds features & backwards compatibility for their games etc.Nintendo has always been innovators and have come out with the best products sense back in the days of nintendo,snes,g ameboy and so on.They wouldn't be taking a step backward by getting into other markets but they
need to realize that the gamers and the markets are changing very fast and their goal should be to hop on the band wagon but in Nintendo style.Microsoft only let down is that they dont & havent yet came out with a handheld device but everyone is still doing find with the 360.
