Nintendo to plan 3DS releases around third parties

Why do we have to wait so long for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D? Because third parties need to succeed, explains Satoru Iwata.

"First, I would like to comment on the titles for Nintendo 3DS. If any one of the titles you mentioned Animal Crossing, Mario Kart or Super Mario, right now is not released within this fiscal year," Iwata said, "I do not believe that we will sell 16 million units of Nintendo 3DS hardware this fiscal year."

"Therefore, I cannot tell if all of them will be released in the current fiscal year, but at least some of these anticipated titles will be launched in this fiscal year. On the other hand, the reason why we have not yet set the launch dates is not only because of our development status, but to create an environment in which third-party titles will also sell well," he explained, " which is the aim we set when we announced Nintendo 3DS. If we fail to create such an environment, we will not be able to maintain the momentum of the platform continuously."

Iwata went on to say that Nintendo can't hold its market by itself, and it needs excellent third party support to do so. This means that Nintendo will be scheduling their first party titles around releases of third party games.

Actually a good strategy, I bought street fighter with my 3DS(tho regretting S.F.), had something like zelda or mario been out, I never would have purchased it.

Thats a horrible strategy.
3DS NEEDS to succeed. And we need games.
We shouldnt have to wait for things that are done.

I doubt very much that Mr. Iwata meant that they were going to withhold first-party releases, rather that Nintendo plans to structure the release schedule so that there is a constant stream of new releases and every title gets a fair shot to reduce sleeper titles and increase sales all around. nintendo is notorious for pushing their games much harder than third party titles. i think this is a good strategy for nintendo to cultivate more of a symbiotic relationship with other developers and allow them to highlight each title and give consumers more reasons(first and third party equally) to purchase their hardware. i dont know if anyone read the article about a week back about nintendo wanting to work hand in hand with other studios/developers on "project cafe" inorder to produce the best possible product for the fans/consumers, its my assumption that this is a way of testing those waters and planting the seeds for these collaborations and a show of good faith in an attempt to get more devs on board. after the past 5 years,it looks as though nintendo is finally making "good moves"!

also anyone who seriously thinks nintendo will withhold releases is mistaken, they need to turn a profit and without games, it gets harder to do so, i dont think we will have to worry about a lack of first party titles any time soon.

Although this strategy angers many gamers, I can understand why Nintendo are doing it. From a financial perspective, it means they can ensure a steady cash sparodically(?) throughout the year, as opposed to launching all their big titles at the beginning of the launch and thus limiting units hardware sales further down the line.

if they could hold off releasing another Mario game for the next 50 years, I might actually have a chance at getting rid of my worryingly intense hatred for that whiny voiced fat man.
