Nintendo Spreading out 3DS Games

If you ask people what’s holding them back from purchasing a 3DS, one of the common responses you’ll receive is “lack of games.” Since the launch of the device in March, we’ve yet to see any real push to fill the handheld with quality software. Sure, there are a few good titles here and there, but for the most part, we’ve been watching the future and hoping for some real releases. Ocarina of Time and StarFox can’t hold the line by themselves.

While the lack of 3DS titles may seem like a problem to some analysts, it’s actually a purposeful situation created by Nintendo in the hopes of generating more sales in the long haul. Their thought process seems to be, “Sure, we can make a pile of cash in November, or we can wait and release our games with fewer competitors.” Nintendo isn’t merely concerned about how a 3DS game will hold up against Skyrim, but also how each game will fare when released near other 3DS games.

Here’s a quote from Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo:

“For us to provide software titles one after another, one idea is, 'Isn’t it possible for Nintendo to stock some of its software titles instead of launching them as soon as the development is completed?' Video games need to stay fresh, so it is not practical for us to put them on hold for too long, but we think that some of them may be held for a certain amount of time so that there will be a short interval between when they are completed and when they are launched."

“We are taking on this sort of challenge for the Nintendo 3DS. For example, when we look at the software lineup for the year-end sales season, it is so dense that, if we added any more software, the total sales would not increase. Accordingly, we have intentionally delayed the launch of some software titles to early next year.”

It makes sense that Nintendo would want to create a perceived scarcity with their releases. It would be folly to drop ten new 3DS games in the next month when you look at the ridiculous amount of competition coming in from other consoles. Of course, the holiday season is always good for actual system sales, but we’ll have to see if Nintendo’s gamble pays off.

Do you think pushing big titles back to 2012 makes Nintendo more likely to achieve success?

... 3DS and PSPgo don't have much in common other than their clamor for a slice of the handheld market share. I really have no idea what you're talking about.

3DS actually seems off to a good start to me - it's ahead of the DS and PSP at the same point in their life cycles. New system struggles are the norm.

So the games are already made? They're just stringing along the release dates of them? To me this sounds as if they don't have that many games. so they are delaying some of them just so it seems that a new game comes out every month for the 3ds. meanwhile the delayed game was ready like 6 months ago.

FFS Nintendo, artificial delays NEVER help games sales OR customers. Just give us the damn games now

Vita is going to and its going to rightfully kick your ass

"Buy our current game [or other stuff] and we release more later on" ... yeah, that's how every business operates.

Failed? That implies that it's dead already and it's not usually until a system is about a year and a half before things start to get interesting. Things haven't done much but look up for the little system over the past two months.

By golly it just might make it!

I doubt it'll make it unless third parties start releasing decent titles, and they're deserting it in droves for Vita. I picked up a 3DS at launch and bitterly regret it - I was enticed by Kid Icarus and Metal Gear, but neither title has been given a release date and they were supposed to be launch titles. I won't be buying any more Nintendo systems (or games at this rate) and I think the tide is turning - casual gamers can play games aimed at them for a fraction of the price on mobile, and serious gamers want more than a region-locked gimmick with no third party support. It's already dead, and it'll be buried in February when Vita lands.

Most people who hate on the 3ds dont own one.I have one and I love it with or without software being out.The 3d never hurts my eyes as I can play for many hours on end with no problem. The updates they actually release for the 3ds are way better than any update that the psp's have had and yes I also own a psp & pspGO.With Features like recording 3d video & pictures and dlc and many more to come including possible 3d netflix movies etc the 3ds will start to get better as time flies. What pisses me off is all the people who think Nintendo should give up on the 3ds like its a major failure when the reality is that they just released it way to early as well as had a few canceled titles along the way (Assassins creed, Saints row,Megaman legends etc.YOu guys need to give the 3ds a chance because I didnt buy this cancel to watch it fail and be a one hit wonder like the virtual boy...
