Nintendo explains the reasons behind the 3DS price cut |

Flat out apologize to existing 3DS owners who they feel was ticked off by the sudden shift.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has issued an apology letter to early 3DS adopters over last week's surprisingly drastic price drop. As translated by the folks at Giant Bomb, Iwata admits that the decision to cut the price of it's newest handheld was tough, but changes needs to be made in order for the device to succeed.
"In the past, there have been price drops for video game systems some time after their release in order to broaden the user base further. However, never before has Nintendo chosen to issue such a dramatic price drop less than 6 months after a system release," Iwata wrote. "We are all too keenly aware that those of you who supported us by purchasing the 3DS in the beginning may feel betrayed and criticize this decision."
"This unprecedented timing for a price cut is because the situation has changed greatly since we originally launched the 3DS. We decided it was necessary to take this drastic step in order to ensure that large numbers of users will continue to enjoy the 3DS in the future," Iwata continued. "If the software creators and those on the retail side are not confident that the Nintendo 3DS is a worthy successor to the DS and will achieve a similarly broad (user) base, it will be impossible for the 3DS to gain popularity, acquire a wide range of software, and eventually create the product cycle necessary for everyone to be satisfied with the system."
Iwata reiterated that early adopters "are extremely important" that's why they are offering the 3DS Ambassador program as a token of appreciation to "make up for the feeling that you are being punished for buying the system early." The retail price of the 3DS will drop from US$ 249.99 to US$ 169.99 starting on on August 12.

i dont want a 3DS for 2 reasons
1.lack of games
2. to me the 3DS is a slightly better DS with 3D done poorly. MY HTC Evo3D looks amazing and causes me no eye strain. on the other hand i cant look at the 3DS screen for long without feeling sick.
3DS and Vita have one major problem CELLPHONES. 3DS more than the Vita seeing as nintendo cater to the casual market. Everyone has a cellphone why carry a 3DS or Vita when the games on cellphones in my case get the job down and they go for a buck instead of 40
Nintendo like to innovate in there hardware but in my eyes fail to do so in there games same old ips with some wiggle and now a tablet yawn.
my 2 cents hate it or love it bite me

I got it at $50 off so not too disappointed but happy with the free 20 games I will get.
Its a good handheld and I like the 3D part even if it does mess with your eyes sometimes.
Still the DSi is a very good choice if all you want to do is play DS games. The DSi is a better looking handheld compared to the 3DS.

It is interesting to see if it would affect the pricing of PSV.

How about this: an overpriced system launching with no good games for much more than the small child market can afford. The gameboy was traditionally cheap, and thus sold well.
