Analysts and shareholders feel that Nintendo needs to go the route of smartphones.

"Smartphones are the new battlefield for the gaming industry. Nintendo should try to either buy its way into this platform or develop something totally new." -- Ohki, a fund manager at Tokyo-based Stats Investment Management Co.

"They just don't get it. Sell the stock, because a management once feted for creative out-of-box thinking have just shown how behind the times they are." -- MF Global FXA Securities Ltd.

"Nintendo should aggressively make acquisitions or increase returns to its shareholders. It's management's task to consider how to make use of the cash." -- Ii, president of Tokyo-based Commons Asset Management Inc.

Epic Games even agrees that the iPhone may be the future of gaming.

"So I think that's the real challenge for us now, rather than worrying about the difference between a couple consoles and some order of magnitude, whether 3X or 4X. It's about how do we deal with iPhone 8... if you watch where the gamers are going that's where they are. Your iPhone 8 will probably plug into your TV, or better yet, wirelessly connect to your television set to give you that big screen gaming experience with good sound. So really, what's the point of those next-gen consoles? It's a very interesting situation to be looking at. That's what we're starting to think about more... not how do we scale from some Nintendo platform to some other future console," Mike Capps had said.

"So really, what's the point of those next-gen consoles?"

Because a stupid smartphone cannot replicate big games that I enjoy.

Screw smartphone games.

Just because iDevices are kicking ass and taking names, doesn't mean Nintendo is behind the times. Do those fools have any clue that almost a 150 MILLION handhelds have been sold by Nintendo in the DS generation alone.

The DS was their last system they created. That's the past. Therefore, behind the present. That's where the term "behind the times" comes from.
It doesn't matter if you did something extremely awesome last generation, you need to constantly be getting better. You can't just say you're doing good if you're ignoring current figures and looking at the past. Sorry.

Nintendo has a vision. And that vision isn't selling selling buttonless touchpads with 5 dollar games. Get over it. If you want buttonless touchpads, there are people who make those. Don't expect Nintendo to do it.

Wow, really? You think the DS is in the past?

With 150 million consoles still in circulation and with the 3DS being able to play DS GAMES and with devs still creating DS games....you might want to think about that one for a little bit longer and see what you come up with.

Even worse when he realises how much his precious smartphone "gaming" holds up to something he just called "behind the times".

Exactly. I love my iPad for gaming but it's a specific type of gaming. Which is also why I have a 3DS. They both play completely different games.

Although, to be fair...touch based ONLY games on the DS systems would also work on touch devices. I would love me some Professor Layton on my big ass iPad!!!!

Some AR Prof Layton or Phoenix Write, or Zack and Wiki would be pretty sweet.

now here is something that should have a PoV article on. Should nintendo get with the times and make a smartphone handheld? My answer as always is a no. Dedicated gaming platforms are awesome. So is mobile computing but I don't think they need to be one in the same and if these analysts don't agree with me let's see where the Playstation Phone goes.

Gamers and Nintendo fans agree: analysts and stockholders can go shove it up their ass and continue to release crappy movie games that nobody buys.

Shareholders only care about what might line their pockets more than anything because honestly probably most people would prefer if Nintendo remained in the Handlheld/Console market instead of going the smartphone route. Give them a break you can't always be on the top.

Stupid people who know nothing and care for nothing other than money...

These iphone 'gamers' aren't 'gamers' - their bored people who saw angry birds at the top of the app store list for .99 and said 'screw it - why not?'. Their impulse buyers. These people aren't going to be gobbling up apps in 5-10 years as they get older and their focus shifts from killing time to filling time with productivity. The next wave of impulse buyers are going to see these apps as generic 'old news' clips. Not to mention the leaps and bounds console and pc devs are going to make in that time... so yah, right, apple will take over the overall gaming market in 1.5 years (probably when the iphone 8 will be out XD)

If anything, these investors should cash out before it becomes evident that apple is starting to peak and their late to the moneyshowerpart y.

shareholders are dumbasses why are they backing a company they know likes to stick with games when they want to go another direction here is an idea go buy smart phone shares then there wouldn't be a problem. let's see how much success the psp phone has had i don't know the actual numbers but i doubt it has more than maybe 2 mil sold and that is what these idiots want?

time... shareholders and analysts don't have it. So they are guessing on the current situation. Probably not factoring in that the 3ds hasn't even been through a Christmas season yet. The season where all the games come out and the kids are all looking at the ads and magazines dreaming of the next game/system they want. I'm a going to wait until then to make my decision.

Nintendo is behind the times in games and technology. Only now that nintendo shares aren't doing so hot do shareholders finally realize that. I wonder if nintendo will release new games instead of re-releasing games from the '80s and '90s. It was when nintendo cared.
