Nintendo-3DS-Home

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich comments on one of the recent Nintendo 3DS rumors.

"The days of publishers developing a single game for multiple technologically differentiating platforms are over. Madden NFL 09 for example was developed for the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox, Wii, Nintendo DS and PSP, all of which required at least 4 different internal teams. If the 3DS rumors are true and Nintendo plans to add a second analog stick, it would at least group the Vita and 3DS into the same category," Divnich explained.

Currently, Nintendo 3DS only features one analog stick. It does have a D-pad, but it's right below the analog stick.

"While the technological differences would require additional development resources, more so than when an Xbox 360 title is ported to the PS3 (or vice versa), adding a second analog stick to the 3DS at least make game porting between itself and the Vita possible. ...There is certainly a shared benefit that both Microsoft and Sony receive from their home platforms having similar technological capabilities," he continued.

"I believe the same shared benefit can be realized by Sony and Nintendo if their portable platforms were more closely aligned. How Nintendo would roll this out, or whether these rumors are even true, is yet to be known. But if the rumors are true, I don't foresee Nintendo having much difficulty getting consumer adoption of a new component. As we've seen with the Wii, Nintendo was able to integrate the Wii MotionPlus rather smoothly by including it into the Wii Sports Resort game package and this was achieved even though the Nintendo Wii had a rather large installed base at the time. The 3DS is still in its infancy and has a much smaller installed base. It certainly can be done."

Agreed for obvious conclusion.

Total bunk, no way in hell would they make a revision like that with the same model name. How the hell would you sell games for it?

"Pick up Ultra Fantasy Story today for your 3DS, well, you know, the newer one, not the older one, the one two stick thingies on it"

The rumormill is so boring these days.

The sources that are quasi-confirming these rumors is reliable. I wouldn't dismiss it so easily. Nintendo is getting desperate.

To all supposed 'analysts', like this guy in the article:

No way on that 2nd analog stick. This would be a disaster for Nintendo since they will alienate the people who currently own the 3DS and scare the heck out of their third party developers.

Its a rumor, knuckle heads!
Stop comparing Wii with the 3DS.
They are different! Even the introduction of motion plus alienate and miffed other Wii developers.

Most likely Nintendo will announce upcoming games and not hardware revisions so it(2nd analog) wont happen!

Another analyst with the same vein as Pachter -- the guy who 'analyzed' that the PS3 would dominate in 2006-2010 and relegate Nintendo to last place in sales!

I wouldn't dismiss this rumor so easily. There are many sources (some reliable while some not-so-reliable) are confirming it.

Cross platform games is the way to go for 3rd party devs.

But I don't think it is fair to make identical games for both. it has to be at least with something unique for each one.

For example 3DS will have the 3D version, and vita will have all the enhanced graphical features.

We know that both 3DS and Vita have an ARM based CPU
The 3DS rumored to contain Two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs. which is a quite nice upgrade from the DS.
while PSVita (4 core ARM Cortex-A9) .

According to ARM website:

the ARM Cortex-A9 (in vita) got fully backwards compatibility on native code with ARM11.

So theoretically, cross platform games is going to be easy for developers.

That's of course for the game logic but for the graphics, it can't be helped since the 3DS do not have a programmable shaders like Vita so it will always have the edge.

Yeah, I'm sure all the people who've already bought a 3DS will be REAL HAPPY with that.

I can't see Nintendo being that stupid, i mean it already had a 1/3 price cut within months and the launch lineup is just weak, plus typical post-Wii Nintendo most of their first party games are just rehashes of good old games with almost nothing original and new, so i'd give it at least 2 years for the 3DS lite or whatever before an extra analog.

I'm thinking those are more reasons to support the idea than reasons why Nintendo wouldn't.

Well clearly someone has not played the DS in its golden days. If you recall, it does have a touch screen that could function as a 2nd joystick (Metroid Prime: Hunters). Also, Nintendo does not have the liberty of adding a 2nd joystick at free will on the 3DS. With the Wii Motion Plus, it was so much more easy because all they had to do was add an attatchment. 3DS kinda has no attatchment support so trying to upgrade the old ones will prove very difficult. Not to mention with the gyroscope you could have, albeit awkward looking in public, moving around work as well like in Ocarina of Time 3D First Person Mode. However, this would require total freedom of around you and would be difficult to do in most situtations. The way I see it 3 things could happen:
1) Let's say hypothetically this 2nd joystick comes out. If Nintendo was smart, they would keep everything in the original 3DS the same. 3D unchanged. The only thing changed was adding a new joystick and maybe better battery life. What they could procede to do from here is everyone with an old 3DS can backup all of their stuff onto their SD card and exchange theirs for a new one with no charge, granted there's still a warranty on it or you'll have to pay a small fee. This also includes purchases you've already made, photos, etc just like the DSi transfer. But this could cause an issue like what are they going to do with the old 3DS'?
2) The 2nd joystick is just completely a false rumor, however a new 3DS model does come out, only to feature less or no 3D for those idiodic hipsters and a cosmetic change.
3) The whole thing is just beyond full retard and people need to stop believing 100% that rumors equal facts, reliable or not.
A 2nd joystick would be beneficial somewhat, but they already have backups for that such as the touch screen. Granted you lose 5 buttons, Metroid Prime: Hunters seemed to have no trouble.

5 buttons disappear when I use the touch screen? Oh No! That wasn't in the manual!
