3DS passes one million sales mark in Japan

Enterbrain has confirmed that Nintendo's latest handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, has finally broken the one million unit sales mark in Japan. In the end, it took the 3DS 13 weeks to do something that the original DS did in four weeks. Comparatively, the DSi and the DSLite both reached the one million mark in eight weeks each. The DSi XL took the longest at 25 weeks.

The handheld got off to a good start but sales slowly started to drop after about a week of being on retail shelves. After domintaing the Japanese hardware sales charts immediately after it launched, the 3DS eventually gave way to the PSP. In April, the Sony handheld took the top spot and held on to it throughout the month of may.

Despite the 3DS missing Nintendo's early sales projections, publishers and developers still believe that things will turn around soon. Don't expect the slow start to force Nintendo to give it a price drop any time soon, however.
