The Final Fantasy franchise has gone through a lot of iterations in its more than two decades of history. Pretty soon we can add "rhythm game" to the list of genres the franchise has crossed into, thanks to the announcement of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. Square Enix has finally let loose a few details regarding the indieszero-developed 3DS title.
According to a report on gaming blog Andriasang, Theatrhythm is a rhythm game featuring characters, songs, and other elements from the main Final Fantasy entries. The game is played as a party of four Final Fantasy characters, which will likely consist of the characters in the Dissidia games' roster. These characters will level up as stages are cleared, although exactly what kind of level up gains a rhythm game has to offer has not yet been fully explained.

Players will be able to choose from Final Fantasy I through XIII, with each title offering three stages -- "battle", "field", and "event" -- that feature their own gameplay systems. Collectible music and movie scenes will also be part of the game. Players can also choose from different difficulty settings.
The most important aspect of a rhythm game is the music, of course, and Theatrhythm has a lot to offer Final Fantasy fans. Among the songs confirmed as included are the main Final Fantasy theme, Clash on the Big Bridge (Final Fantasy V), One Winged Angel (Final Fantasy VII), At Zanarkand (Final Fantasy X) and The Sunleth Waterscape (Final Fantasy XIII).
You can check out the game's official Japanese site here. Trademarks for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy have already been filed in North America and Europe. The same can be said for Final Fantasy Type-0, but a North American release for that game is still not guaranteed.
