Ubisoft survey hints at possible NGP price

Sony is still keeping mum about their price pont plans for the Next Generation Portable except to say that it won't restrict the device to the ultra-rich. It seems at least one major publisher has a good idea of how much it will cost, though.

Ubisoft recently sponsored a survey conducted by research firm Toluna that sought to guage consumer reaction to the NGP. The survey states that US$ 350 is the expected retail price of the PlayStation Portable successor's 3G-capable model then asks responders, "How likely would you be to purchase the Sony NGP now that you know this retail price?"

The same question was asked about the NGP model that has no 3G connectivity. The price for that particular model was placed at a considerably lower US$ 250 cost.

Keep in mind that the prices are from Ubisoft and should not be considered official. Only Sony can set the final retail price. Still, it's probably safe to expect the two NGP models to have similar price points since the survey is from a major publisher.

That's quite a difference between the two models. Is 3G really that much more expensive?

Well if you look at other gadgets with a 3g/wifi option 100$ difference is usually spot on.

As for the 250$ price tag, that's a load. Sony fans can dream but it's simply not gonna happen.

Very affordable prices, makes me happy. ^_^

However, it's a bit weird NGP could cost 250/350$ while Xperia Play goes over 600$ or so.

I had heard that the Xperia Play hardware is worth $400 alone (that is to say, with no retail mark-up). Take that for what it's worth.

But yeah, there's no way that the NGP costs less than the XP. Not only does that not make sense from a perspective of the tech alone, but if if really did cost $250-$350, Sony would have announced it already in order to take most of the wind out of the sails of the 3DS.

Unless of course they plan on selling the thing at a loss, but I'm sure that I had already heard that they said they weren't going to do that.

you guys forget that the XP has one major feature that the NGP does not. its a phone. people want phones that will play games too but they dont want just handheld device. i can see the NGP going for 250 to 300 due to the fact that they need to keep in the race with the big N

Any unlocked smartphones go that high.
iPhone 4G 16gig and Droid X are $600 unlocked/off contract.

SONY should just reveal the damn price already, some people need to know when and how much to save up for it. All this secrecy stuff is pointless cus when the real price is revealed and is too much people will complain. Now if it was revealed beforehand, then they can work on it and maybe reduce the cost of manufacturing and reduce the overall price for the consumer.
Don't know how many of you are looking forward to the NGP but I for one am hoping it a succes.

It'll be a different time when it's finally released... about 9 months or so? Holiday season 2011.

The price could be very different then compared to now. Very different in console terms is about $50.

They're probably waiting it out to announce because even they aren't certain yet.

350 sounds like a reasonable price without the 3G
But 3G might be around 450 to me still sounds good
For what it is I would have no Problem paying that
As long as it stays supported
Only real question I have about the 3G is are they
Going to make you pay for the service which is most likley going
To be the case :-*

I wont be giving Sony a stinking nickel, or buying anymore of their crap. Sony took Linux away on the PS3 - what feature will they take away from the next system they sell you?

They already took features from NGP, which are unknown, so it's sorta better than removing when the client is already using.

you people dont relize what is going on the reason sony has not anounced how much yet is because there going through the blogs and other comments and are determining what people are willing to pay for itand guess what with everyone saying 300 thats what it will be when they acually anounce it there trying to price it to the consumer so they dont have another ps3 problem we all remember that they didnt sell very many at laucnh because of the high price same with the pspgo way to expensive for having less fetures then the lower priced 3000 models
thats why they have only made comments on its affordability and not on the acual price itself it is a good marketing
sceme that will benifit them well very smart really after all you cant make a profit if most people cannot afford to spend the money it shows they are learning and to the xperia play they simply priced it to the same cost as other competiters

I simply cant afford anything over $300. $250 would be the best because, remember YOU HAVE TO BUY GAMES TOO! I wonder how much games are going to cost? If they are the same, then $250 will have to be the price. People will be able to buy games at the same time as buying the NGP without spending an arm and leg. Or maybe just an arm ;-)

It is too much.

I will not buy it.

I will never buy anything that says $ony on it. Fuck them. Fuck Microsoft. Fuck Nintendo. Fuck everything, ever. At least if it is capitalist.

I expected an advanced hardware but for that price 300 $ I mean they cant offer anything other than a GPS in addition to a better PSP. God's sake I bought PSP-go for something around 300 $ ! Dont trim NGP's functions Sony.

The NGP can cost 250$ when the Xperia Play costs 600$. Why? Because Xperia was designed to be sold in the thousands, while the NGP is designed to be sold by the millions. When you mass-produce something its price point goes down. That just common sense.
