PSP is done; NGP is dead on arrival; 3DS is gimmicky, says ngmoco boss

A lot of developers may have high hopes for Sony's Next Generation Portable, but smartphone game developer and publisher ngmoco isn't one of them. As far as ngmoco boss Neil Young is concerned, the NGP will be a "dead on arrival" follow-up to a handheld system that's already "done".

psp-ngp-3ds

Speaking to Industry Gamers at the ongoing Game Developers Conference, Young said that Sony will be unable to compete with smartphone app stores that have a wide range of games and apps available for a fraction of a traditional handheld game's price.

"I think PSP is done and the new [NGP] is dead on arrival," he said. "It's really difficult to compete with an app store that has hundreds of thousands of applications and a wide range of options where the average price paid is around US$ 1.20 and there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of free applications that are really high quality. So I just don't think Sony's going to be able to compete with that."

Young also believes that even the Sony NGP's processing and graphics power, which has been compared to a PS3-like experience, won't be enough to save the handheld. "It's not a PS3 quality experience...," he said. "And in terms of getting broad adoption, having great processing power is not necessarily a prerequisite for great adoption in the marketplace. You need a range of things and what I think the iPod Touch and iPhone have been able to do is offer people swiss army knife type functionality for a device that plays games really well."

Even the recently released 3DS, the successor to the wildly popular Nintendo DS, wasn't safe from Young's critical assessments. Although he admits that Nintendo's popular first-party IPs will be able to propel the 3DS into competitive territory, he brands the handheld's 3D features as "gimmicky".

"I think Nintendo will likely be competitive," he said. "My personal opinion is that the 3D piece of the puzzle is kind of gimmicky. But Nintendo has great franchises and there are tens of millions of people who want to participate in those franchises, so that always helps... But the real question is the degree to which there's a third-party community."

What are they trying to accomplish here? This is something I expect to hear from someone's blog or a random user on GameFAQs.
It sounds like he's walking into a room full of game developers and saying "Everything sucks!" and then leaving.

"smartphone game developer and publisher ngmoco isn't one of them"
It's like hearing someone who traces or plays bowling with bumpers make critical statements about real artists and real bowlers.

Yes Psp has been over and done for years now but no matter what you want to say about 3DS you just know it's gonna sell like Hell, and that just proves you don't need all the latest technology if you just put some thought into your product and understand the marketplace, and that's why Sony has a very high chance the NGP will fail because they couldn't give a crap what their customers ask for.Quoting xnamkcor:

...is everything I could ever hope for. ^^ The difference between Nintendo and Sony is that they focus on different things with their platforms. It opens up for more varied content on each platform.

Maybe this generation I'll end up buying both the 3DS and NGP. ^^

I hate to say it, but... he might be right in part at least. Nintendo+Mario=Game Sales, Sony+???=???, They need a good franchise(that's a Sony exclusive that people actually want) to make it's way to the NGP for it to be competitive. PSP will obviously have to step aside despite what Sony says, but the #1 absolute biggest advantage of smart phones comes down to two words:
OPEN SOURCE!!!

Sony/Nintendo need change their industry model for licensing and instead allow what the smart phone industry does and what MS is doing with XLIG. Offer the full power of your system to indie/hobbyist type devs and make a marketplace for them where they can sell games cheap and you keep a cut from sales rather than a license fee. A major dev wants to make a $60 for it... fine let them release it there as well and keep a cut of the profit. If one of them do that they would win over the other and Smart-phones.

I keep hearing how handhelds are fearing the smartphones with their apps and cheap games..

But seriously, I have an iPhone and some games are fun, but I don't see anyone no-lifing those iPhone games. Also, the controls suck big time on most of em. For real control, you'll need a controller.

Smartphones vs Handhelds is like..
Pokemon/Monster Hunter vs Angry Birds.

Yeah, Alex totally just threatened that guy. I bet guy is now afraid of all people named Alex because he doesn't know which one will try to murder him...

... It wasn't a threat of violence. It's an old technique of generating humour in which person A takes a statement by person B about an object/person/concept/etc which A finds ludicrous (example 1: "This site is a piece of shit!") and replaces person B(or in more recent time, B's Mom) in the statement (example 1, cont.: "B ['s Mom] is a piece of shit!").

It has traditionally been a form of high-humour, reserved in Victorian times for the aristocracy, but made accessible to all at the American revolution. You should really learn your history! [The humour here derives from me making two ludicrous statements facetiously, fusing both dull ludicrosity with an ironic commentary on your ability to respond appropriately to low-brow humour]

but I partially agree with this guy, his other statements though are just one sided and very... how do you say... spokesman like? Anyway no the NGP and 3DS aren't going to fail; they will never sell like the iPhone though since well the iPhone is... a phone... (for the most part), thing is not all users are gamers; hell even app users, I've seen multiple people still running an older iOS because they don't know how to update the thing or just dreads at the thought of using iTunes (even though they have an iPhone...), anyway the statement I agree with is about the apps, while I'd like to think we gamers generally know what games are "quality" games, other people don't, and its those people that skyrocket the sales of apps, point being is we will probably see lots of "app" like games for the NGP and I would think the 3DS also, cause you know what? If 1 dollar apps keep churning revenue for apple and developers, game companies are going to want that piece of the pie too.

Questions.. you answer if this guy is right or wrong. The more the numbers the more chances of winning in this battle.

1.) App Price : 1 to 2 dollar apps VS full blown console game.

Question1: What do you prefer and what kind of gamer you are? Casual Gaming Apps or Full Blown Hardcore Games?

Question2: How many consumers are there that prefers these type of gaming? (Casual VS Hardcore)

2.) Current Installed based : Casual based gamer using phone VS Hardcore Gamer using a portable machine dedicated for gaming.

Question3: How many can that installed based be after several years? Who's installed based will grow faster?

3.) System Platform Price : High-End Phone Price VS (NextGen)Portab le Gaming Machine Price.

Quistion4: What machine do you prefer to use and purpose?

Full Blown Portable Gaming Machine or Phone apps with call capability?

It will decide if the NGP will be able to conquer the casual gamer cloud and dominate at the same time the hardcore gaming cloud in the future... or not.. or dead on arrival.. =(

yeah, and probably 90% of those apps are either a duplicate of another app, are something you would never need to do on a PSP (like a 'reorder my contact lenses' app), or they just plain suck.

I do think the NGP will be dead on arrival, but people will still buy it and it won't be realized until people who buy it realize it's another PSP Go.

As for the 3DS, I only have 3 words to sell it to most people: Ocarina of Time.

Im sorry to everyone but I agree 100% with this guy. The PSP was pretty much over after the PSPgo came out, and now theyre bringing a new "PSP" out called Next Generation Portable, which is exactly the same as a PSPgo, only its the same size as a PSP3K (about) and it has fancy things like better graphics, touch pad shit and dual analog sticks (which is the only good thing about it). And on the 3DS's main feature being gimmicky? 100% correct in my opinion. Neil, youre my bro. i may have never played one of your companies games but i stand by your opinion. To be honest, i personally think the 3DS is just Nintendo's way of selling all the Virtual Boys they have leftover in their back cupboards. Screw the new generation of gaming, its shit. you are a complete idiot, the NGP is not just a bunch of "fancy" gizmos. its called innovation. what handheld have you seen that can produce similar quality that of a ps3. NONE. what handheld uses a capacitive touch pad in the back to utilize in games like uncharted. NONE. yes the touch screen feature has been seen before in a smartphone, but have you seen an epic game come out on a smartphone? NO! Y? because smartphones do not have quad core cpus and do not have the power to run games that of the NGP. take your iphone and shove it. id rather spend 60 dollars on a great game than a buck on a completely pointless and shitty app. hense why most game devs stay out of the smartphone market, because there isnt enough power nor innovation nor control in a smartphone, i hate shooters on a touchscreen smartphone.

I for one have never been a fan of phone apps. Regardless of how great they are, they just can't replace dedicated gaming devices for me. I love my PSP, I love my DS. I don't like either more than the other. Both are great and have titles that I enjoy playing. Phantasy Star, Monster Hunter on PSP, DQIX, Professor Layton, etc.. on DS. IMO phone apps on android and iphone are more gimmicky than anything else. See Angry Birds... you shoot birds and people like that game??? I've played it but can't really comprehend why people like that game...

This guy will be debunked when the next generation systems are launched. How do you play god of war on an IPHONE? How do you see the screen when you have to touch it to control the characters? I find that the psp is the greatest handheld system ever created and the NGP is the next iteration of "top of the line." The 12 good apps from the thousands of loser apps on the app store will be ported to a real system or an app emulator will handle that problem. 3ds will be cool and Apple will copy Nintendo with the Iphone 5 3d.
