PSP is done; NGP is dead on arrival; 3DS is gimmicky, says ngmoco boss |

A lot of developers may have high hopes for Sony's Next Generation Portable, but smartphone game developer and publisher ngmoco isn't one of them. As far as ngmoco boss Neil Young is concerned, the NGP will be a "dead on arrival" follow-up to a handheld system that's already "done".

Speaking to Industry Gamers at the ongoing Game Developers Conference, Young said that Sony will be unable to compete with smartphone app stores that have a wide range of games and apps available for a fraction of a traditional handheld game's price.
"I think PSP is done and the new [NGP] is dead on arrival," he said. "It's really difficult to compete with an app store that has hundreds of thousands of applications and a wide range of options where the average price paid is around US$ 1.20 and there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of free applications that are really high quality. So I just don't think Sony's going to be able to compete with that."
Young also believes that even the Sony NGP's processing and graphics power, which has been compared to a PS3-like experience, won't be enough to save the handheld. "It's not a PS3 quality experience...," he said. "And in terms of getting broad adoption, having great processing power is not necessarily a prerequisite for great adoption in the marketplace. You need a range of things and what I think the iPod Touch and iPhone have been able to do is offer people swiss army knife type functionality for a device that plays games really well."
Even the recently released 3DS, the successor to the wildly popular Nintendo DS, wasn't safe from Young's critical assessments. Although he admits that Nintendo's popular first-party IPs will be able to propel the 3DS into competitive territory, he brands the handheld's 3D features as "gimmicky".
"I think Nintendo will likely be competitive," he said. "My personal opinion is that the 3D piece of the puzzle is kind of gimmicky. But Nintendo has great franchises and there are tens of millions of people who want to participate in those franchises, so that always helps... But the real question is the degree to which there's a third-party community."

It sounds like he's walking into a room full of game developers and saying "Everything sucks!" and then leaving.
"smartphone game developer and publisher ngmoco isn't one of them"
It's like hearing someone who traces or plays bowling with bumpers make critical statements about real artists and real bowlers.

OPEN SOURCE!!!
Sony/Nintendo need change their industry model for licensing and instead allow what the smart phone industry does and what MS is doing with XLIG. Offer the full power of your system to indie/hobbyist type devs and make a marketplace for them where they can sell games cheap and you keep a cut from sales rather than a license fee. A major dev wants to make a $60 for it... fine let them release it there as well and keep a cut of the profit. If one of them do that they would win over the other and Smart-phones.

Apple reinvented the field, and nobody saw it coming. Deal with it.

But seriously, I have an iPhone and some games are fun, but I don't see anyone no-lifing those iPhone games. Also, the controls suck big time on most of em. For real control, you'll need a controller.
Smartphones vs Handhelds is like..
Pokemon/Monster Hunter vs Angry Birds.
Good fight xD

... It wasn't a threat of violence. It's an old technique of generating humour in which person A takes a statement by person B about an object/person/concept/etc which A finds ludicrous (example 1: "This site is a piece of shit!") and replaces person B(or in more recent time, B's Mom) in the statement (example 1, cont.: "B ['s Mom] is a piece of shit!").
It has traditionally been a form of high-humour, reserved in Victorian times for the aristocracy, but made accessible to all at the American revolution. You should really learn your history! [The humour here derives from me making two ludicrous statements facetiously, fusing both dull ludicrosity with an ironic commentary on your ability to respond appropriately to low-brow humour]

1.) App Price : 1 to 2 dollar apps VS full blown console game.
Question1: What do you prefer and what kind of gamer you are? Casual Gaming Apps or Full Blown Hardcore Games?
Question2: How many consumers are there that prefers these type of gaming? (Casual VS Hardcore)
2.) Current Installed based : Casual based gamer using phone VS Hardcore Gamer using a portable machine dedicated for gaming.
Question3: How many can that installed based be after several years? Who's installed based will grow faster?
3.) System Platform Price : High-End Phone Price VS (NextGen)Portab le Gaming Machine Price.
Quistion4: What machine do you prefer to use and purpose?
Full Blown Portable Gaming Machine or Phone apps with call capability?
It will decide if the NGP will be able to conquer the casual gamer cloud and dominate at the same time the hardcore gaming cloud in the future... or not.. or dead on arrival.. =(

yeah, and probably 90% of those apps are either a duplicate of another app, are something you would never need to do on a PSP (like a 'reorder my contact lenses' app), or they just plain suck.
sorry apple, quantity does not equal quality.

$ony suck and they will continue to suck and sales will prove this.
I was a launch day buyer of $ony products till they ban my account. Sorry $ony but you ban me and I do the same. I will NEVER buy another $ony product and I know there are many others in the same boat as me.

I do think the NGP will be dead on arrival, but people will still buy it and it won't be realized until people who buy it realize it's another PSP Go.
As for the 3DS, I only have 3 words to sell it to most people: Ocarina of Time.

All I know is, I love Nintendo games so the 3DS is a must for me. Mario, Zelda, Metroid...I can never get enough. Plus, with my iPad and iPhone....no need at all for the NGP. But that's just me.
