NGP is not just for the ultra-rich, says Sony |
Listed in: News Tags: next generation portable, SCE, SCEE, Sony

Sony's Next Generation Portable is one powerful handheld. It may not be as powerful as the PS3 (Sony says that if made it that way the battery life would last all of five minutes and it would set your pants on fire), but it still packs a whole array of cool features that pretty much leaves its predecessor in the dust.
Of course, the thing about powerful devices is that they tend to cost a lot. Sony has been rather cagey wil their plans for the NGP's price point and so far we haven't heard anything official from the company yet. A bunch of Japanese developers have recently placed its possible retail price at around JP¥ 30,000 (around US$ 366) to almost JP¥ 40,000 (around US$ 488).
Pretty expensive, right? Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's vp Jim Ryan, however, has made it clear that Sony isn't trying to market the upcoming handheld gaming platform just to the super-rich. They want to make the NGP's install base as broad as possible.
"Sony's ambitions when it comes to installed base are considerable, so we're not talking about the ultra-rich," he recently told PSM3 magazine.
Ryan's statement echoes previous comments from Sony Computer Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida. Yoshida said last month, "There's no point putting everything you want into a device and doing the math later. We always had the price and consumer in mind. We had to sell something that people could buy."
The NGP, which has been in development since 2008 and has yet to be given an official name, is expected to be released later this year.

Ideally, they should price it to compete with the 3DS.

I'm Batman!!!
Really if this isn't technologically advanced enough to be on par with the PS3 or at least Xbox original, then why pay as much as I recently paid for a PS3 Slim($300)? They spent like 3-4 years on this, did they not?

I'd go into more detail... but it looks as if common sense eludes you completely.

If they wanted to make it so real people can actually afford the fucking thing, it should be in the vicinity of $200.

An extremely unlikely chain of events led to me budding off of a yeast cell in an old English brewery up in North London, and I was born in a giant vat of Heineken.
The only reason I didn't drown was because I managed to drink the lot and the entire thing was well ventilated ('twas an old brewery) causing a massive influx of oxygen, but the irony of it all is that Heineken is one of the few beers I can say that I hate with a passion.
Anywho, I grew up separated from my siblings, who died many generations ago (though their descendants are happily carrying on the family business of fermenting drinks) and my adoptive father eventually lost his trial and was given ten years for endangering the life of a child as well as supplying alcohol to an infant.

considering you havnt lost enough money on the ps3 or any of your other fine systems, could you stretch yourself just a little closer to the brink of bankruptcy and lower the price of this technological marvel to compete with a system that has half the features and much less than half the power just so all of us drooling kids can cover another generation of your phenomenal handheld system with fingerprints, while dropping it every 10 seconds, complaining about every game that makes an attempt at standing out as innovative or "niche" and calling your customer service department in order to make a warranty claim because we stupidly left the system in the bottom of a backpack full of books to be thrown around and have the screen cracked. if you could price it just under the pricepoint at which you would make a dime, that would be great.
wishing you were microsoft,
-every 15yr old on call of duty ever"
give me a break, does anyone have any concept what it costs to put bluetooth, wifi or 3g functionality into something let alone all the rest of the features, paying engineers, software programmers, licensing, marketing, providing support for downloadable media. if you cant rationalize saving your pennies and waiting for it then dont buy it and definitely dont bash all these companies who make games and systems that we enjoy so much. whether it be microsoft, sony or nintendo, they each put millions into developing these systems and they definitely deserve your respect not to mention to turn a profit. yes, everyone buying the ngp on day one will probably have a woulda coulda shoulda wish list of features and specs, but sometimes its much easier said than done, especially when it comes down to setting a demographic-friendly pricepoint. i mean if you want cheap, get a cardboard box and your imagination, if you want the most advanced graphics and processing capabilities to date, expect to pay a premium (ever hear "you get what you pay for"). please consider this and give credit(or cash haha)where credit is due especially when the companies are giving people everything they asked for, literally everything people complained about being absent in the first iteration of the psp is on the table, besides, lets just be happy its not $600. haha

NO TV OUT!?
that is the only reason why I won't buy it... I would sell my 360 if this comes out with TV out so that I can game at home and on the go.

Sony, the plague of the earth. Please, go bankrupt. Now. And take Nintendo and Microsoft with you.

Considering the entertainment value of the machine, it is not a bad range.
Maybe since it also comes with 3G, they could make carriers sell it for way less if you sign up for a contract or something and have that tied to your mobile phone contract.
