Fresh from GDC 2011, Sony has announced that the latest iteration of their "free to use graphics engine" has been released to support game developers and publishers on both the PS3 and its upcoming Next Generation Portable device, the NGP.

According to Sony, the latest version of their cross-platform game engine was designed based on the feedbacks from its development community. It includes a new asset pipeline that combines enhanced versions of its exporters and processing tool, a rewritten level editor, a more accessible API and far more game-oriented functionality including support for entities, scripting, and integrated physics and navigation components that will allow developers to produce high quality titles with less time and lower costs.

Previous versions of PhyreEngine have been used by a handful of downloadable and retail titles such as Demon's Souls, Critter Crunch, Shatter and thatgamecompany's Flower and flOw.

“We're very happy to see the popularity of PhyreEngine with the global game developer community” said Teiji Yutaka, Senior Vice President, Technology Platform of SCEI.  “It has helped demonstrate our commitment to the game developer community and in particular enable smaller independent developers and publishers to flourish on PS3 and NGP.”

sounds good, it looks like Sony is really going all out for NGP, let's just hope it won't cost an arm and a leg when it gets released

If Sony really want to show their commitment to NGP they should release something comparable to Unreal Engine with very cheap licensing, because they stopped giving a crap about Psp years ago and need to prove they gonna make a long-term effort with this one.

If you check the the previous article... Sony start development of NGP in 2008 and they involved the first party software developers to help in the development.

and not just with developing games, but in the development of the various aspects of the platform itself too, such as hardware performance and component choices, form factor, usability tests, connectivity, user interface and features, target audience, business models and software product portfolio. In short, everything.

So support started to decline in 2009

Sony published 124 games for PSP (from total 674)
(including retailer and PSN only games)

2005: 21 games
2006: 24 games
2007: 28 games
2008: 32 games
2009: 15 games
2010: 4 games

PSP was almost dead in his late cycle anyway in some part of the world (with the raise of DS & iOS) and devs has no interest to take risk for only small profit margin

Sony had to direct their effort for next gen ..and to not take the same "hard" mistake again.

The problem is this isn't 1995 anymore and simply publishing games isn't enough for a modern console, it's the lack of new features being implemented, lack of help offered to developers and the fact they simply did little to stop the platform stagnating while competitors kept innovating. And saying they were busy on a new console so didn't have time for Psp is absolutely no excuse while they taking good money from us, and who says they won't do the same thing again in 4 years while developing the Psp3.

PSP evolved with time by firmware updates.

Updates wasn't solely for fighting piracy (though I'll give credit to Sony for that cause it drain much resources)

System software updates have added various features including a web browser, Adobe flash player 6 support, additional codecs for images, audio, and video, PlayStation 3 connectivity (Remote Play), VOIP access(Skype) and a Digital Comics Reader.

As far as I know DS & DS lite with NO system update ability.. I think this feature first introduced with DSi.. and thats come as new hardware ...as I don't have a DSi to be sure.

And my previous post just to till you that the life span of PSP was shorter than expected, We can only hope that won't be the case for NGP.

Other developers did all the work and risk with those engines, it's always Sony's lack of effort leading the way bringing things to their own console that's my problem. They've been lazy with Ps3 but did a passable job, where the effort they put into Psp is just pathetic.

Last time I checked those other Devs Praised Sony because. Sony made it more easy to bring on their engine.

And someone was quoted
"NGP is a developer's dream – Sony is finally doing the things developers have been crying out for for years,”

You shouldn't really bothe responding to that dude. He's an anti-sony guy. Everything Sony does, whether it's good or bad, he always seem to find something bad to say about them.

good news but why are NGP articles still going into the PSP section, I think most people would have realised the NGP tab at the top by now.
