The PSP's next successor is all set to conquer the handheld gaming market once again with the arrival of PlayStation Vita.

Forget about NGP, Sony next handheld will be officially called "PlayStation Vita" from now on. Announced during the company's E3 2011 press conference, the PlayStation Vita (aka PS Vita or the PCH-1000 series) will come in two versions, a Wi-Fi Model which sells for 24,980 yen (including tax) in Japan, US$ 249 in US and €249 in Europe, and a 3G/Wi-Fi model which will be available for 29,980 yen (including tax) in Japan, US$ 299 in US and €299 in Europe. The device is slated to arrive in the "global market starting the end of 2011."

"Vita,” means “Life” in Latin according to Sony. It was "chosen as the most appropriate name for the next generation portable entertainment system as it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. SCE is aiming to transform every aspect of user’s daily life into an entertainment experience."

Late last week, Sony has announced its first party titles for the upcoming handheld. It includes Uncharted: Golden Abyss, a new Wipeout game called WipEout 2084 and Super Stardust Delta, among others.

I'm a tad disappointed by the name too. There's something off about naming the gadget after the word for "life" in a dead language. Kinda paradoxical.

Huh, I tried to reply to Rob's comment on the name. Damn it QJ, fix the reply box.

On the topic of price, however, I'm a little pissed that it costs more in Europe than it does in the US.

For a moment when I first started reading that, I thought you were serious. Now I am glad I can have a sigh of relief that you are not.

"*1 year later in a news update* SONY has decided it's best to remove the media center and online capabilities of the PSV for security reasons.
*Half a year later* According to a PS hacking site, the PSV has been hacked.
*1 month later* Sony has changed their name to SUNY and is currently suing the PSV's hackers.
*1 week later* SUNY has re-activated the camera and GPS in the PSV to watch and find suspicious PSV owners.
*24 hours and 3 minutes later* SUNY has been taken down by half of the PSV community..." lol jk

Colour me surprised at the price-point. Makes me wonder if they're selling this at a loss to compete with the 3DS.

Of course they are selling it at a loss. Just look at all the hardware packed in there! This thing probably must cost $400-$500 to manufacture.

U gotta be joking right?
It wont cost nearly what they say as they will remove all the good features they first advertised and keep removing features over its lifetime too.

At its $250US and $300US I'm wondering what the AUS version will cost?
As its the exact same thing I'm guessing in AUS it'll cost $400AUD and $500AUD.

They love to rip off us Aussies.

Does seem like a pretty good price.

I guess I could get a paint marker or some fingernail polish and paint out any labeling that says "vita".

Heck, maybe I'll paint out anything that says sony too and then tell people its the new handheld xbox.

:)

I pity the word "vita" for being used in such way.

I guess the UK price will be £249.

Thumb down for now since there are not good games for psp vita just yet. I am not in hurry to buy one until there are better games at first.

What Sony is doing is making it cheaper in America but more expensive in other countries.... tricky.

I'm really baffled by the game industry's choice to charge more for products in the EU. Why do they do it? Is it just the game industry or are other things like this as well? Is there some ridiculously high tariff imposed on imports into EU or some other factor that makes it more expensive to sell products there? Or is it simply that they figure the people there are willing to pay more so they just go ahead and charge more? If that's the case, then why exactly are people willing to pay more? Do they all make 50% more money on average than people in the US do (300€ being approx 50% more than 207€)? Or do EU residents just really love them some video games so much that they're willing to pay more for them than we are?
