World of Warcraft damage mitigation investigation: armor or dodge?

World of Warcraft - a Tauren Druid - Image 1Damage mitigation is an important issue when talking about tanking. When playing the pin cushion for angry mobs, it helps to know exactly how much damage you take and how to properly reduce the effects of the mobs' damage. For World of Warcraft players, there are four ways to affect damage: enemy debuff, immunity (almost like dodge), dodge and armor.

For tanks, the first two factors they could deal with first is armor and dodge. Well, it's really as simple as that. Either you expect to get hit and reduce the damage as much as possible or you avoid being hit in the first place.

But armor and dodge are related to class and ability points. The game does well to include this passive ability to all characters, but only some classes can dodge much better than others.

Rannasha, a level 70 Tauren Druid, investigated into the Druid's damage mitigation options (even with bear-tanking) between armor and dodge. He has come to the conclusion that there is a trade-off between putting one point into Agility and a point into Defense Rating. You can consider that if you put a point into Agility, you can increase your ability to dodge considerably, while adding some armor points to your current total.

In contrast, if you put a point into Defense Rating, you will be able to decrease your chances of being hit by a critical blow, while allowing your armor point total to increase considerably. Depending on the balance you want to have, you may find this guide helpful in striking a compromise between the two factors.
