Racist arena names in World of Warcraft? - Image 1

A poster named Mallory on the WoW Forums recently complained about racist names in World of Warcraft Arena teams. Mallory cited the Kool Kids Klub as an example of the racism that is occurring in the game. This is a very sensitive subject for a lot of people, but I'd have to agree with the posters that the intent of the organization must first be taken into account before any action should be taken.

Blizzard Poster/ Forum Moderator Nethaera spoke on this saying "Please feel free to report inappropriate arena names that you may find the same as you would inappropriate names in game. The GM department will look into it and take all necessary action." While Mallory was met with a lot of hostility for the complaint, the WoW player could very well be raising a valid point here. If the organization meant any offense with their name, then it really must be looked into.

That said, my personal opinion on this is shared by another poster Weep who noted that "
what isn't clear is why you decided to label these people before you ever got your 'clarification'."  Be sure to keep checking back here for more of the latest news on World of Warcraft.

My 3 Cents

Its a game get over it. Morons are morons. I do agree that labeling characters profane or racist names tends to reveal something decrepid about the indivduals that play the game. Also, I am sure there are people who take offense to such names. If people worry about such insignificant things then they are validating the players actions. Why else would they name a character a racist name, why for attention of course. There is no suitable justification for the names. As in most cases on the internet freedom of speech is less threatening. If someone were say such things in real life, it may lead to trouble. But in this quasi-fantasy world, you can't really do anything now can you except half-heartedly complain that players who display derogatory names are mean people. Let them have their stupid kicks and let them belive that what they are doing is cool. As long as they are the only ones believing then they are also the only ones being fools.

Doomed to repeat history?

bottom line is it's not entirely fair that a small footprint in history can shape the paranoia of everyone's future. Just because KKK meant something awful for a brief period of time (in the millions of years the earth has been around) should it be taboo forever? People still name their kids Hitler, Sadaam, etc. If all words associated with hate crimes, criminal activities, catastrophes were banned.. we'd have no names left after all the murderers and hurricanes and hate groups were weeded out.

Hmm.

i could perhaps understand if the Guild/Team was Called Ku Klux Klan, but even that i have a problem with. but its Kool Kids Klub. people should be able to name whatever they want, I can understand blocking a User named ***** Killer or something Equally Racist and Dergitory. but just because the organization is known for racist or sexist beliefs doesnt mean you can be against a name. its a name, Lighten Up.

I Was Called a "Racist"

Im sooo annoyed with the whole racisim problem, i myself was called a racist in the game and i was banned for 3 days, i had no suport and no warning just "get out" i feel victimised by blizzard and there system is gross'ly unfair some one tells a gm somthing, gm takes action, should be some one tells Gm, Gm speaks with player in question, some sort of judment then action. ive felt like quiting so manny times but i have gone so far i wouldnt like to loose my progress.
