One of the most demanded things in City of Heroes/City of Villains are wings. Issue 9: Breakthrough brings you more wings which can be accessed via the new Invention system the developers have added to the game. Jay Doherty of Cryptic Studios talks about the development of wings in a recently released developer diary by NCSoft.
For those who visit the CoH/CoV forums regularly, you may have heard of Doherty's thread where you can post requests for costume pieces you want to see in the game. What started out as a pet project for him drew the attention of the community. He said that the thread had about 10,000 requests within two weeks, and one of the biggest requests were wings.
Doherty believes that wings are "one of the most difficult player costume pieces to make for the game". To make things simpler, they decided to use two basic models for the wing which they have dubbed "Bat" and "Eagle". One thing that most players take for granted is that the wings have to look good whether in the air or on the ground. He described the difficulty of doing this as a "giant pain in the butt". Still, that didn't deter him as he insisted on giving each set of wings a distinctive silhouette.
So far there are ten wing sets, and Doherty commented on each of them giving COH/COV players a little insight on the development process of each wing.
Wing sets:
- Angel: natural and bird like
- Demon: elegant, sharp, and vampire-like
- Dragon: big, bulky and tough looking
- Burned: supposed to be for undead and monstrous characters
- Bone: If burned isn't undead enough
- Bat: cutesy accessory
- Cherub: cutesy accessory
- Insect: "bad-ass" since the animators made it look like real buzzing wings
- Tech: created due to public demand, though Doherty doesn't understand why robots would need it
- Fairy: for all the good little girls in CoH
