WoW hostage scenario: Glimpses of DK-free PvP'ing?

Scenario: Guys hijack plane, demand concerned parties to cough up a cash ransom to get said plane back. Concerned parties call in Special Forces, who then end up killing hostages in a rescue attempt. No this isn't the botched 1985 Egypt hostage rescue, and it ain't a Chuck Norris flick. For the residents over at World of Warcraft's Mal'Ganis PvP server, this is the famed flightmaster hostage world PvP incident back on November 4.

For those who don't know what this is about, here's a brief summary: Last month, the highly eccentric Goon Squad Horde Guild (dudes from somethingawful.com) staged the kidnapping of the Alliance flightmaster over at Theramore. Their demands to the Alliance were simple: To buy two Lightforge Belts listed for 1500g at the Neutral Auction house, or they wouldn't be seeing their beloved flightmaster for the weekend. In connection to this, Goon Squad also camped the Ratchet boat and kidnapped the Auberdine flightmaster.

The "unofficial" event garnered quite a lot of player activity, and large numbers of Alliance members were prepping to combat the Horde for this incursion rather than pay the ransom, leading to a massive world PvP event...except it never happened. A few hours into the event, several people made complaints to the GM's regarding the kidnappings, who then summarily "killed" the hostage flightmasters. No flightmasters, no hostage. No hostage, no PvP.

Strangely enough, the Goon Squad got commendations from both the Alliance and the Horde for this original twist in PvP'ing, though inversely, the WoWInsider guys didn't take too happily to the GM's spoiling the fun.

GM Issues aside, this did spark the topic of the new DK-free PvP system for WoW. Given that Dishonorable Kills have been removed in the recent patch, we're wondering just what sort of escapades players like the Goon Squad are going to cook up. That, and if the GM's are still gonna be the game's reputed party-poopers.

Its reason like this that people play MMOs. Its about dynamic gameplay experiences. I cant believe the GMs came and *****ed it up. Stupid.

This is a clever little stunt, impressive.

I'm on the side of the GM's ONLY if the server in question was not a PvP server. When players sign up for PvP servers, they should expect to handle radical events like this on their own.

# GM's go home.Guest 2006-12-16 04:31
It was a PvP server, all intended in fun. If they can't handle it they should play on a PvE server, or sign up for "Hello Kitty Super Fun Online Knitting"
