World of Warcraft Loses Two Million Players |

When the developers of World of Warcraft laid out their hopes for the game, they originally aimed at 200,000 players. With that many players, they reasoned, they could break even and keep supporting the game. As we all know, World of Warcraft landed far more than 200,000 players and quickly became the most popular MMORPG ever created, boasting up to 12 million users at the height of its popularity.
Things seem to be on the downtrend for WoW as of late, with Blizzard announcing that 800,000 players have left in the months between July and September of this year. That brings the total for the last 12 months up to around two million, which is about 16% of the WoW user base. It’s by no means a small number, but Blizz is still riding high with ten million subscribers.
Naturally, the company is focused on creating great content and keeping the players it has, in addition to bringing new people in through special promotions and reduced prices. I myself am thinking about getting back into WoW – my sister recently started playing and it would be fun to spend a couple of hours a week questing with her.
But that’s the main problem WoW faces. People, for the most part, play what their friends play. When my friends left WoW, so did I. Blizzard does an excellent job of development, but as the market changes people will inevitably be drawn to new titles. WoW is going to be around for a long time, but this could be the beginning of the end for the “one MMO to rule them all” marketplace we’ve been living in for the last six years.

And nothing lasts forever. It's still impressive to have 10 million active subscribers!
And yeah I agree Mike. Better to blame Cataclysm. Rehashing old content is a sure fire way to pi** off your user-base. That and dragging a content patch on for almost 6 months.

I believe that for a game to be successful there has to be something to aspire to. Competition brings that about.
When i played wow the most i played to be the best in pve.
Then wotlk killed it for me as i didnt feel any challange.
I still dont when there is nothing to challenge you its just meh...
