Free-to-play certain seems like the way to go when it comes to MMOs nowadays. Most of the new games launching in the MMORPG bracket are F2P, and plenty of games that originated as subscription-based titles have either already switched or are planning a switch in the future (Aion, LOTRO). Blizzard, however, thinks the payment model for World of Warcraft is working just fine.

In an interview with PC Gamer, WoW producer John Lagrave answered a few questions about the game’s subscriber counts and the possibility of going free to play. He claimed that Blizz is very happy with the payment model they’re using, and that WoW offers enough top-quality content to make paying a subscription worthwhile. He also hinted that F2P games burn out players more quickly, though he provides no data to back up the statement.
Lagrave was clear that Blizzard hadn’t completely ruled outF2P for the future, noting that he couldn’t say World of Warcraft would “never” drop its subscription. But for the foreseeable future, it looks like WoW will remain a paid MMO.
We’ll just have to keep an eye on WoW to see how the paid strategy works out. The game has been hemorrhaging subscribers for the better part of two years, but its upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion may bring lapsed players back into the fold.
Would you jump into WoW if it were free-to-play?

There's private servers that are free to play and sell gear in a store, go pvp on those and find out what it would be like. It'll never happen, they'd probably last only a year and it would be toast. All the vets would boycott, and the f2p people would get bored cuz those type dont have money to buy the VIP gear.
BTW qj, who plays Aion or LOTRO? You don't need facts on f2p, it's just common sense.
