Transformers MMO beta starting soon |

It's been a pretty big year for the Transformers franchise. There was a movie, a new toyline, and new videogames. That last part's getting another new entry soon, as developer Jagex has revealed that it will soon be commencing the beta phase of its upcoming Transformers Universe massively multiplayer online game.
The browser-based game's executive producer, Kris Jones, said in a recent interview that "it's not going to be far away. We're launching this in 2012, so it goes without saying that the beta will be soon."
Jones also revealed that the upcoming MMO will be taking a few cues from the Transformers: Prime animated series, which sees Optimus Prime leading an Earth-based team keeping watch for the return of the Decepticons. The series's first season began back in February after a five-part miniseries premiered on the Hub in November 2010. A second season is slated to start this November.
"We're in that universe," Jones confirmed. "We've taken some assets; we've been in touch with the studios and we've taken from that, but we are our own game - that's the bit that needs to be made clear. We're not making a game based on any existing continuity.
"We don't want to pigeon-hole ourselves to just the toys, or just [Generation 1], or just Prime, or just the movies. We've been very clear that we want to take from all over the universe. That's why it's called Universe."
The most important aspect of Transformers -- the ability to transform into something else -- will of course be in the game. Jones said that what vehicle your character can transform to will be dictated by your class choice, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be stuck with one alternate mode. The game will also attempt to marry accessibility to newer audiences with big, long story arcs and a more adult tone compared to the cartoons.
