Cryptic Studios' Star Trek Online will be heading to the free-to-play route later this year.
"In addition to seeking out new life and exploring strange new civilizations, part of our continuing mission for Star Trek Online is to expand and improve," said Jack Emmert, CEO, Cryptic Studios. "Transitioning to a free-to-play model is a natural way to share all we've built with a broader community of players and we couldn't be more excited."
Cryptic adds that players can opt to access additional features "a la carte" through the games virtual store, while current players can become "Gold Members" by continuing their US$ 14.99 a month subscription of the game. Silver Players (new members) can also become "Gold Members" by upgrading to Gold status for a set price of US$ 14.99 per month.
So what's the differences between paying Gold Members and free Silver Players?
Free players will have limited mail system, reduced inventory space, limited guild fleet and only two character slots, among others, while Gold Members on the other hand can enjoy exclusive perks, like Foundry access, veterans rewards, priority login, and monthly stipend of store points.More details about the F2P move can be found here.
