Sony's expecting 100 million users for Free Realms

Is this a realistic target for Sony to set? After being hounded by issues at launch, the publisher is still expecting some 100 million users for their MMO, Free Realms.

Their optimism is hinged largely on the fact that it's a kid's game. "The great thing about a kids' game is that there are always more kids," so rationalized SOE president John Smedley.

It was previously launched on PC in 2009, and then later on hit Mac in 2010. Their expectation may not be so unfounded, though, as these two previous releases yielded some 17 million users.

"It is a phenomenal number and we're very pleased with its success - and it's really keeping going," he said. "I don't see this stopping until it hits 100 million."

"I think it could take five or six years. But I don't see any reason why it can't go to 100 million, because there are so many kids out there. And the great thing about a kids' game - and this is different for an adult audience and people don't think about this - is that there are always more kids."

"The endless supply of children that have a hunger for gaming, as long as we keep improving it and make sure it's still relevant - which we do every month with patches - means that we expect the game to have a long life."
