SOE shutting down Star Wars Galaxies this December |

If you're still playing Star Wars Galaxies, you better get your fill of it this year. Sony Online Entertainment has announced that the original massively multiplayer Star Wars game will go offline for good on December 15th.
The MMO has suffered declining subscription numbers since SOE introduced controversial changes to the gameplay mechanics in 2005. SOE boss John Smedley, however, explains that the decision did not arise due to that or the recent spate of hack attacks against Sony
"The decision to shut down SWG is first and foremost a business decision mutually agreed upon between SOE and LucasArts," he told online gaming blog Massively. "LucasArts has a new game coming out, and the contract would be running out in 2012 anyway, so we feel like it's the right time for the game to end."
In the run-up to the game's shutdown, SOE is extending special Fan Appreciation offers to the Star Wars Galxies community. The studio also plans to end the MMO "with a bang with a galaxy-ending in-game event in December." You can find additional details at the source link below.
With Star Wars Galaxies gradually fading out of the picture, the stage is now all set for EA and BioWare's new Star Wars MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic.
